FAQ
Before you get to shop, here are some pointers for choosing a gaming monitor:
- Panel type – IPS or TN?
You should choose a panel according to your gaming needs. An IPS panel will always have better viewing angles and have better colour reproduction, i.e. games look nicer, but they generally do cost slightly more and can only lower refresh rates and response time.
Meanwhile, the cheaper TN panels have more restricted viewing angles and more dull colours, but they do tend to have higher refresh rates and response times, i.e. game visuals will look smoother when moving.
- Refresh rates and response times
Simply put, higher refresh rates means being able to produce (view) more images in a second on the screen. And being able to see more images combine in a second, makes for smoother visuals.
This feature makes a huge difference, especially when you’re playing competitive (ex. first player shooter) games against real-life gamers where milliseconds matter. At the minimum, 60Hz is good enough for smooth gaming, but 144Hz tends to be the sweet spot for ultra smooth gaming.
Complementary to refresh rates are response times, which dictates how fast pixels change colour (in layman terms, how fast the images change to the next one). We recommend that serious gamers should ideally look for 1-5 ms response times, though the difference might not matter to the normal consumer too much.
- G-Sync and FreeSync
Sure, you have a GPU to ensure G-Sync or FreeSync for smoother graphics. But sometimes when the frame rates pushed out by your GPU is too fast for your monitor’s refresh rate to catch up with, then screen tearing happens (images are tearing, literally).
This is quite distracting, and may diminish your enjoyment or performance in-game. Therefore, it’s wise to get a monitor with G-Sync (from NVIDIA) or FreeSync (from AMD) support, which attempts to eliminate screen tearing without affecting performance.
