Short answer: the best air conditioner for most homes in Malaysia is the Daikin FTKF25C 1.0HP Wi-Fi inverter at RM1,679 on Shopee Malaysia (price checked 1 November 2026). The cheapest inverter we would buy is the Hisense AI10KAGS at RM1,099, the lowest price overall is the Hisense AN09CBG at RM874, and the Midea MPO-10CRN1 portable at RM909 is the pick when you cannot install anything.
We checked Shopee Malaysia listings on 1 November 2026 and kept only models with a current listing for the exact model at a real price. Prices are the lowest size on each listing and exclude installation. We checked listings and manufacturer specifications; we did not buy or test these units. How to Choose an Air Conditioner: Six Checks Before You Compare Brands
| Check | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Horsepower vs room size | 1.0HP for a bedroom up to about 120 sq ft; 1.5HP for 130 to 200 sq ft; 2.0HP and above for open-plan living rooms. Add a size up for a sun-facing room. | Too small never cools the room; too big switches off early and leaves it clammy. This is a rule of thumb, not a measurement. |
| Inverter or non-inverter | Inverter if you use it most nights, non-inverter only for a few hours a week. | The inverter compressor slows down instead of switching off, which is where the running-cost saving comes from. |
| Running cost (kWh) | Compare the rated power input and the energy label, not the BTU figure. | A 1.0HP unit drawing about 0.8kW for 8 hours uses about 6.4kWh a night. |
| Star rating | 5-star costs least to run; 3-star least to buy. Read the label on the unit, not only the listing. | Malaysian units carry an energy label; the gap between stars is paid back through the bill. |
| R32 refrigerant | All seven units here use R32. | R32 is the current standard refrigerant and is more efficient than the older R410A. |
| Warranty and service centre | Brand warranty with a Malaysian service centre near you; keep the invoice. | A long compressor warranty is only as good as the nearest centre that honours it. |
| Installation cost | Ask in writing whether piping, bracket and labour are in the listing price. | Many online listings sell the unit only, so the real cost can be well above the sticker. |

Best for most homes: Daikin FTKF25C 1.0HP Smart Wi-Fi Inverter Air Conditioner
1 more point
1.0HP inverter, 4-star, CSPF 4.60, R32, Wi-Fi through the Go Daikin app
This is the unit we would buy for a bedroom or small living room that is cooled most nights. It is the only pick here that combines an inverter compressor, app control and a long compressor warranty from a brand with service centres across Malaysia, at RM1,679 on Shopee Malaysia (checked 1 November 2026). It is 4-star, not 5-star, so a household that runs it ten hours a night would save a little more with a 5-star model from our apartment air conditioner guide. Skip it if you only need cooling a few evenings a week: the cheaper Hisense inverter below does that for about RM580 less.
Best for a Daikin on a budget: Daikin 1.0HP R32 Non Inverter FTV28P
1 more point
1.0HP non-inverter, 3-star, R32, 9,500 BTU/h, Go Daikin app control
It buys the Daikin name, the app and the service network for RM1,218 on Shopee Malaysia (checked 1 November 2026), about RM460 less than the inverter above. The price of that saving is a compressor that switches fully on and off, so the electricity bill is higher and the room swings slightly in temperature. Choose it for a guest room, a rental or an office used a few hours a day. Anyone who sleeps with the aircond on every night should spend the extra on an inverter.
Best for a budget inverter: Hisense Standard Inverter Air Con R32 AI10KAGS
1 more point
1.0HP inverter, 4-star, R32, 9,200 BTU/h, HiSmart app control
The cheapest way on this list to get an inverter, from RM1,099 on Shopee Malaysia (checked 1 November 2026). The compressor slows down once the room is cool, which is where the saving over a non-inverter comes from, and the sound rating is up to 38 dBA on its quietest fan setting. It will not match a 5-star unit on running cost, and Hisense is less established than Daikin for out-of-warranty repairs, so keep the invoice and register the warranty.
Best for the lowest price: Hisense Standard Non-Inverter Air Con R32 AN09CBG

1.0HP non-inverter, 3-star, R32, 9,000 BTU/h
At about RM874 on Shopee Malaysia (checked 1 November 2026) this is the cheapest air conditioner we would still recommend, and the one to pick when the budget is fixed and the room is small. It cools a bedroom of normal size without fuss. It also has the highest running cost here, because a non-inverter runs at full power until the room is cool and then stops. Expect a louder start-up than the inverters and plan for the higher bill.
Best for larger rooms: Midea ALL EASY PRO Inverter Air Conditioner R32 MSEP-CRFN8
1 more point
Inverter, R32, sold in 1.0HP to 2.5HP, 24-hour timer
This is the pick when the room is bigger than a bedroom, because one range covers 1.0HP to 2.5HP and the seller lists it as a 5-star inverter, from RM1,719 for the smallest size on Shopee Malaysia (checked 1 November 2026). Pay attention to which size you click: the price rises with horsepower, and a few near-identical codes (MSEP and MSEPB) circulate, so confirm the model and the star label printed on the box before you accept delivery. Midea is a sensible value brand but has a thinner premium service reputation than Daikin.
Best for a clean-air non-inverter: Haier R32 Non Inverter HSU-10LPB21 1.0HP Air Conditioner
1 more point
1.0HP non-inverter, R32, Nano Aqua Ionizer, anti-corrosion compressor
A mid-priced non-inverter at RM1,069 on Shopee Malaysia (checked 1 November 2026), worth considering over the cheapest Hisense if the ionizer matters to you or Haier has a good service record in your area. For the money the Hisense inverter above is the better long-term buy, so choose this one mainly on brand preference or a good installation offer. Several sellers list the unit without installation, so read the listing before ordering.
Best for renters: Midea 1.0hp Portable Air Conditioner MPO-10CRN1
1 more point
1.0HP portable, rated 9,000 BTU/h, wheels, exhaust hose
The only choice here that needs no installer, at about RM909 on Shopee Malaysia (checked 1 November 2026). That is the whole appeal for a renter whose landlord will not allow a hole in the wall: roll it in, vent the hose through a window and go. Be realistic about the cost: a portable is louder and less efficient than a wall split, and it needs a window to vent through. If you can install a split, one of the units above will cool better for the same money.
Running Cost: What an Inverter Really Saves
As an illustration, not a measurement: a 1.0HP non-inverter drawing about 0.8kW for 8 hours a night, 30 nights a month, uses about 192kWh. At an assumed RM0.50 per kWh that is about RM96 a month. Makers commonly claim an inverter cuts that by 30 to 40 percent, which would be roughly RM29 to RM38 a month; we have not metered either. On those assumptions the RM461 gap between the Daikin inverter and the Daikin non-inverter pays back in roughly 12 to 16 months of nightly use. Check your own tariff on your TNB bill before relying on it.

What are the top 5 air conditioner brands in Malaysia?
The names most often shortlisted are Daikin, Panasonic, Mitsubishi (Electric and Heavy Industries), the Malaysian brand Acson and Midea. Haier, Hisense, Gree and Samsung compete on price and features. We picked models from Daikin, Hisense, Midea and Haier here and cover Panasonic and Samsung in our apartment guide. We have not ranked brands on repair data, so treat this as what buyers shortlist, not a reliability ranking.
What are the top 10 air conditioner brands?
Beyond the five above, buyers commonly add Haier, Hisense, Gree, Samsung and Sharp. For every brand the deciding factors are the same: the right horsepower for the room, an inverter if you run it most nights, a star rating you have read on the label, and a service centre near you.
Which are the top 5 best brands of AC?
It depends on what you value. Daikin is the safest choice for quiet running and a wide service network; Acson is the local option for parts and servicing; Midea, Haier and Hisense give the most inverter for the money. Pick the model first, then check that the brand services your area.
Which air conditioner has a 5-star rating in Malaysia?
Several do. The Midea ALL EASY PRO range is listed as 5-star by the seller, and the Hisense AS10X5TUA and Panasonic X-Premium XU in our apartment air conditioner guide are 5-star 1.0HP inverters. Always read the energy label on the unit: the same model code can be sold in 4-star and 5-star versions.
Types of air conditioners
So, you have finally decided to install an air conditioner in your home. But the thing is, not every air conditioner is created equal since they are different types available on the market. These include:
i) Split air conditioner
The aforementioned air conditioner is named as such because it consists of two units. The internal unit is the one with the rectangular design typically mounted on the walls. It helps to emit cool air within the interior surroundings, and different temperatures can be adjusted using a remote control.
The external unit, a.k.a. the condenser unit, is usually installed outdoors, where its main function is to blow warm air out of the house or building.
ii) Portable air conditioner
Just like the name implies, a portable air conditioner is designed to be movable from one room to another, thanks to a set of caster wheels on the bottom. It operates as a single-unit air-conditioning system, which has a large exhaust tube or hoses to expel the hot air out of the window. A portable air conditioner is usually placed on the floor.
iii) Window air conditioner
Not to be confused with the split air conditioner, a window air conditioner operates as a single unit designed to fit or mount inside a window frame.
Alternatively, a window AC can be installed by making a hole in the wall. It has an exhaust system that discharges the hot air outside while it blows cool air on the indoor side.
iv) Central air conditioner
A central air conditioner relies on interconnected ductwork to blow cool air across multiple rooms or spaces, making it suitable for large homes. Or to be exact, the cool air comes from the supply ducts, which are semi-openings covered by grills located on the ceilings, floors, and walls.
v) Smart air conditioner
A smart air conditioner refers to the type of air conditioner connected to the Wi-Fi network, where it can be controlled using a native app through a smartphone. Depending on the available features, you can adjust different settings like temperature control, geofencing and weekly scheduling. The air-conditioning unit itself looks typically the same as the standard variety, which is usually mounted on the walls or windows.
Air conditioner maintenance tips
An air conditioner is a machine that requires attention from time to time. In other words, regular maintenance plays an important role in keeping your air conditioner running smoothly. Here are some of the maintenance processes that you need to take note of.
i) Clean the air filters
The filters in the air conditioner will accumulate dust, dirt, and other pollutants over time. This decreases the efficiency of an air conditioner, forcing the system to work harder than it should. If you choose to ignore it, these dirty filters will recirculate the airflow through your space and may trigger allergy symptoms such as sneezing and a runny nose.
This is why you need to clean your air conditioner unit every month or so by vacuuming off any clogged dust, lin,t and such. You also need to wash the filters in warm water mixed with a mild detergent.
Another cleaning method that you can carry out is to soak the filters in a bath using a large bucket. Add in a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar (preferably distilled white vinegar) if your filters require a deep cleaning process. Remember to give them a good rinse once you are done.
Finally, allow the filters to air-dry completely before putting them back into the air conditioner.
ii) Clean the coils annually
Other than filters, you need to pay attention to the coils, too. The likes of dirt, dust, and grime found on the coils can reduce its efficiency. You can use compressed air to blow the dirt off the evaporator coils by facing it in the opposite direction.
Alternatively, try using a soft brush to brush the dirt away, and whatever you do, never use hard or wire bristles since they can potentially cause damage.
The third method would be mixing equal parts of mild detergent and warm water in a spray bottle. Spray the mixed solution onto the evaporator coils. Let it soak in for a few minutes to help loosen the dirt and debris. Once done, simply brush off the loosened ones using a soft brush or a clean cloth.
iii) Get professional help for preventive measure
Make it a habit to call an expert or professional to service your air conditioner at least once every 2 years to check the gas pressure and wiring connection. The same also applies if your air conditioner doesn’t cool your indoor space like it used to, as it could be due to a possible leakage from the refrigerant.
Why is the air conditioner leaking water?
If your air conditioner suffers from leaking water, several possibilities cause such a problem.
i) Dirty air filters
Not only can dirty or clogged air filters impact the efficiency of an air conditioner, but they can also obstruct the evaporator’s airflow. This leads to frozen coils when they become too cold. Frozen coils mean the ice will form inside the air conditioner, and the heat from the outside air causes the ice to melt, leading to water leakage.
ii) Clogged drain line
Accumulated mold, dust, and debris can clog the air conditioner’s drain line over time. This leads to a blockage, where the water has nowhere to go as it overflows and causes the air conditioner to leak water.
iii) Damaged/Malfunctioned Drain Pan
The drain pan in question refers to the pan located underneath the indoor unit of an air conditioner. If the drain pan suffers from cracks or damage, it will cause the water to leak. This also happens if your air conditioner is old.

Why is your air conditioner not blowing cold air?
Imagine the day is scorching hot on your way home, and all you can think of is enjoying the cool breeze from your air conditioner. Except that it surprisingly doesn’t blow cold air, and you are left wondering what’s going on with your air conditioner.
i) Clogged air filters
Forget about enjoying the cold air if your air conditioner’s filters are clogged. The culprit? Dust and debris are some of the examples that can also cause restrictions on airflow.
ii) Thermostat problem
Check if the thermostat is suffering from a malfunctioning issue or incorrect settings.
The latter usually happens if the thermostat is set to heat, so make sure to use the Auto or Cool setting.
iii) Leaking refrigerant
The refrigerant in your air conditioner plays a crucial role in producing cold air. However, if the refrigerant is leaking, it prevents your air conditioner from working properly and even causes the humidity levels to rise in your room or indoor space.
Local Conditions: Warranty and Service in Malaysia
Malaysian air conditioners carry a brand warranty that is honoured through the brand's local service centres, so a unit bought from a seller that does not supply the Malaysian warranty card can be hard to claim on. Ask for the warranty terms in writing, note the compressor warranty separately from the general one, and ask who installs the unit, since many online listings sell the unit only.
How We Chose These Air Conditioners
On 1 November 2026 we searched Shopee Malaysia for each model name, read the listings and compared the lowest in-band prices from established sellers. We kept a model only when a current listing named the exact model at a plausible price, and we balanced price, inverter or non-inverter, size range and brand service so the list covers a tight budget, a value inverter, a larger room and a renter. Lazada pages block automated price reading, so every price shown is a Shopee Malaysia price. We did not buy or test the units. Prices change daily, so check the final price before you pay.
Change note, 1 November 2026: rechecked every price on Shopee Malaysia and rebuilt the list from nine picks to seven. Removed: the Haier HSU-10VQA and the Samsung WindFree Premium Plus AR-BYEAA (no current Malaysian listing matching the model), and the Daikin FTKF-B, replaced by the current Daikin FTKF25C. The Midea portable now links the MPO-10CRN1 listing instead of a different model.
