FAQ

- How to use breast pump

Using a breast pump is a common practice for nursing mothers, and learning how to use a breast pump requires time and dedication, so don’t fret if you don’t get it right the first time. Here's a guide on how to use a breast pump:

  • Have your equipment nearby: To ensure you have full comfort and no disturbance, have your breast pump, bottles, breast shields and tubing nearby. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Assemble your pump: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for assembling your breast pump.
  • Position yourself comfortably: It would be best to pump at a quiet and relaxed space. The chair should also good back support. If possible, make sure your clothes are loose, so you can easily access your breasts.
  • Prepare your breasts: Yes, breasts do need a warm up just like pre-exercising. This can help with letdown, the natural release of milk. Try using a warm compress or gentle massage to stimulate your breasts.
  • Place the breast shields: Centre the breast shields over your nipples and make sure they fit comfortably. The correct fit should feel snug but not uncomfortable.
  • Start pumping: Turn on the breast pump to the lowest setting and gradually increase the suction until it's comfortable and mimics your baby's nursing pattern. For comfort, especially beginners, you can try with one breast first and switch to the other after a few minutes.
  • Relax and wait: Once you feel the milk flowing, relax and let the pump do its job. It's important to stay as relaxed as possible because stress can hinder milk flow.
  • Store milk properly: After pumping, store your breast milk in clean, labelled containers in the refrigerator or freezer.
  • Make sure to clean your pump: For best hygiene, clean your pump and all parts that came into contact with the milk according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Practise: It might take a few tries to find your rhythm with the breast pump. Don't be discouraged if you don't collect much milk at first; it can take practice.

- How to measure breast pump size?

The right breast pump size is very important for comfort and effectiveness. If you think you aren’t expressing enough milk, the size might be the problem. Here are some tips to ensure the right fit for you:

  • Choose the right flange size: The flange is the part of the breast pump that fits over your breast. It should be the correct size that fits over the breasts snug, enough to create a good seal without causing discomfort.
  • Measure your nipple diameter: The right size will also help you to express the adequate amount of milk comfortably. Do measure your nipple's diameter (not the areola) and us a ruler or a measuring tape to record the measurement in millimetres.
  • Consult the manufacturer's guidelines: Most breast pump manufacturers will provide sizing charts. After finding our your nipple’s diameter measurement, refer to the printed guide’s recommended flange size.
  • Emphasise on comfort: If the recommended flange size feels uncomfortable or doesn't create a good seal, you might need to try a different size. Everyone is unique, and comfort matters.
  • Observe while pumping: While using the breast pump, observe how your nipple moves freely within the flange without rubbing against the sides. If you experience discomfort or see excessive areola being pulled into the flange, consider trying a different size.

Finding the right breast pump size may take some trial and error, but it's worth the effort to ensure comfortable and efficient pumping. Remember, your comfort and milk flow are the top priorities.

- 3 tips for choosing a breast pump:

Don’t be overwhelmed by the wide array of choices available out there in the market. Your purchasing decision can be made simple if you consider at least these 3 aspects: portability, budget, and usage frequency.

Portability

A breast pump’s portability will determine whether or not it’s convenient to carry around. For working moms, this is especially crucial because you would prefer it to be small and light enough to be put into your handbag. Even if you’re a stay-at-home mom, you may prefer a more portable breast pump to bring while travelling.

Budget

The price of a breast pump varies greatly according to brand and quality. It may be as affordable as below RM100 to as pricey as RM2000. We’d say that the typical working mother should do alright with a simple yet comfortable breast pump.

For those who will frequently breastfeed (not just for one child), you may want to look into investing in a high-quality breast pump which offers a load of unique features. This of course, will cost you more. If you do not mind doing the job manually, then budget ones will do too.

Usage frequency

Whether you choose an electric or manual pump will depend on how often you need to pump. A manual breast pump is best suited for moms who pump less frequently, as they can be tiring to use since you have to constantly pump the handle to create suction. Electric breast pumps, on the other hand, are more convenient for high-frequency usage.

- When is a good time to start pumping?

Dolly does not recommend pumping early after childbirth. It can wait until at least 1 month later after the body regulates per baby’s intake. A mother only needs to pump when she needs an extra stash in the freezer just in case she is away from the baby.

According to Dolly, the best time to start pumping is in the 2nd month after childbirth. During the first month, it is best to manually express or use a silicone breast pump, rather than a machine.

- How many minutes should I pump?

Ideally, a pumping session should be approximately 20 minutes per session. If the mother still feels that her breasts are ‘not empty’, or still have a lot of milk, the pumping session can be extended to a maximum of 30 minutes.

A pumping session should not be longer than that as you may risk hurting or rupturing the milk ducts; resulting in blood in milk.

- How much milk stash do I need?

It depends on your lifestyle and requirements. If you’re a stay-at-home mum, you can store about 2-3 days worth of milk ‘just in case’

On the other hand, working mums don’t need to build a stash until the month you’re returning to work. When you’re at work, you will be pumping enough milk for your baby for the next day feed.

However, many mothers are worried and prepare in advance which is also fine. You can start storing 2 weeks or 1 month before you start work.

- Is my baby getting enough milk?

Babies can suckle more milk than the pump can extract. With this in mind, there is no need to worry as long as your baby is not showing the 3 signs of insufficient milk intake.

The 3 signs of insufficient milk intake are:

  • fewer wet diapers
  • not gaining weight upon routine check-up, and
  • signs of dehydration such as dry lips and lethargy

However, above all, do ensure your baby is latching correctly.

- Why am I not able to pump a lot of milk?

The reasons you may not be pumping ‘a lot’ of milk could vary between:

  • Incorrect flange size of the breast pump
  • The breast not responding well to the breast pump
  • Baby’s intake is not as much (your body regulates according to how much your baby needs)
  • Your definition of ‘a lot.’ You may not be able to pump as much as you want because:
  1. your body is producing how much your baby needs and/or
  2. you’re comparing it to the milk volume of other mothers

- How do I pump more milk?

Massaging before pumping should help you pump more. If the milk volume suddenly drops, or if your breasts aren’t as heavy/full as usual, do:

  1. Manage your stress as it is a No. 1 milk-reducer.
  2. Watch your diet; you may have eaten something that may be your breastmilk ‘killer.’ Do keep track of what you’re eating and the corresponding volume of milk pumped.

- Why does it hurt when I pump?

There could be several reasons which include :

  • Incorrect flange size
  • Suction power too strong
  • Not starting with massage function first
  • Milk bleb, blocked duct or engorgement
  • Sore, dry or cracked nipples

- How should I perform breast massage for pumping?

Always start with massage mode when pumping as this mimics the baby’s first suckle to encourage “let-down”. Once milk is “let-down”, press the ‘pump’ button, starting off with the lowest level and gradually increasing it. If you feel pain, go one level down, and you should feel more comfortable.

- Is breast pumping necessary?

Pumping is only necessary if you’re a working mom and need to have milk stored at home or at the nursery. Double breast pumps are usually used at work, because it is “faster” though single silicone breast pumps work well too. Otherwise, if you can master the marmet technique (manual hand express), it can be as fast and produce more milk than any pump.

On the other hand, if you are always with your baby and you feed your baby on demand, pumping is not needed. Instead, you can opt for a manual pump or silicone pump to boost milk supply if necessary.
