Malaysians who have been eyeing an electric SUV but found the price out of reach have a new option to weigh. MG has added an entry-level MGS5 EV COM variant to its locally assembled line-up at RM103,900, bringing rear-wheel drive electric SUV ownership within reach of more buyers while keeping most of what made the model appealing in the first place.

The COM in the name stands for Comfort, and it slots in below the existing LUX variant. The MGS5 EV now comes in two forms: the COM, with a driving range of up to 340km, and the LUX, which stretches to up to 446km. That gives shoppers a clearer choice between a lower entry price and longer legs between charges.

What the MGS5 EV COM gives you

Priced at RM103,900 for Peninsular Malaysia (before road tax and insurance), the MGS5 EV COM runs a 49kWh battery that produces 170PS and 250Nm of torque, good for up to 340km of range. The pricier LUX steps up to a 62kWh battery, 203PS and 350Nm, and up to 446km, and retails at RM116,900. Both variants keep MG's core safety and convenience features.

MG has built the car around an ultra-thin battery layout that sits low in the floor, which lowers the centre of gravity and frees up cabin space. Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, said the aim was to make electric mobility more attainable "without compromising on quality or the driving experience".

How the COM differs from the LUX

The COM trims features rather than substance. The main differences from the LUX are:

  • Fabric seats in place of ventilated leatherette
  • 17-inch black alloy wheels rather than 18-inch alloys
  • DC fast charging up to 120kW, versus 150kW on the LUX
  • No panoramic sunroof

What does not change is the safety kit. Both variants carry seven airbags and MG's Pilot ADAS 2.5 driver assistance suite, which includes Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control. The COM is offered in Silver and Grey.

Why it matters for EV shoppers

Sub-RM110,000 pricing puts the MGS5 EV COM squarely in the busiest part of Malaysia's EV market, where local and imported brands are competing hard on price and range. Proton's e.MAS brand has already passed 30,000 EV registrations, and a lower entry price is how challengers like MG try to win over buyers who cross-shop on monthly cost rather than headline specs.

Having a car people can actually see and sit in helps too. MG recently opened its 26th outlet in Rawang, part of a push to put showrooms closer to where buyers live. Full specifications for both variants sit on the official MGS5 EV model page.

Price, warranty and launch offer

Every MGS5 EV variant comes with a seven-year or 150,000km vehicle warranty, an eight-year or 180,000km battery warranty, and an eight-year or 160,000km warranty on the motor control unit. As a launch deal, the COM comes with a RM3,000 rebate and a complimentary wallbox home charger.

There is an incentive to book a test drive early, too: customers who test drive the MGS5 EV before 30 September 2026 stand to win a MacBook Neo or RM50 in Touch 'n Go eWallet credits. The COM is available for viewing and booking at MG showrooms nationwide now.

For anyone who wanted into an electric SUV but balked at the sticker price, the MGS5 EV COM lowers the bar by RM13,000 over the LUX while keeping the safety kit and the bulk of the driving experience intact. Whether the shorter 340km range is a fair trade for the saving is the question worth answering on a test drive.
