Samsung Galaxy A52 First Impression: Mid-Range Phone for a Mid-Range Price

The high-end brand's latest mid-range phone is just RM1,499

Can’t wait for a full review of the latest, mid-range Samsung Galaxy A52? We are giving our first impression of the Galaxy A52, 4G LTE version.

This phone is an upgraded version of the A51 which we saw last year in 2020. And this time around, the Samsung A52 comes in both 4G and 5G variants. Our unit also comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor.

This article is brought to you by ProductNation's Youtube Team.

What’s in the box?

  2. 15W Charger
  3. USB-C Cable

Build Quality & Design

Firstly, on the build quality and design of the phone; the back is made out of a plasticky material but gives off a matte finish that’s smooth to the touch. How smooth? It’s kind of rubbery and feels very comfortable in the hand.

Of course, we see a quad-camera setup at the back which has a slightly raised bump. In spite of the bump, it doesn’t look or feel too out there. In fact, the protrusion is minimal in a sleek and stylish manner. And when placed on a flat surface, unevenness is almost non-existent.

A notable upgrade over the previous generation in terms of the build includes an IP67 certification. This means you’ve got total protection against dust as well as the effects of temporary immersion between 15cm and 1m underwater for a duration of 30 minutes.

Overall, we like how the Galaxy A52 feels in the hand. We believe that the matte finish on the S21 Ultra will be a big hit among users, which we think it’s wise of Samsung to opt for a simpler finish rather than a glossy one.

Ports & Connectivity

Like the previous generations of Galaxy As, you got the standard set of ports in the Galaxy A52. At the bottom, there’s the Type-C input, 3.5 mm jack as well as a bottom-firing speaker which supports full stereo surround sound. The A52 also supports Dolby Atmos sound for an upgraded, immersive sound system experience.

Display

The front display on the Galaxy A52 is a 6.5-Inch AMOLED 1080P panel with gorilla glass 5. Our unit - the 4G variant, supports 90 hertz of refresh rate. And not surprisingly, the display is as crisp as ever with visuals looking smooth; standards that you’d expect from a Samsung device.

If you’re interested, the 5G variant comes with a 120-hertz refresh rate panel for those who’d want to rely on the phone for heavier media consumption. The fact that higher refresh rates are now available with a mid-range, Galaxy A Series phone is pretty awesome.

Battery

The battery on the Samsung Galaxy A52 is a 4,500 mAh battery that has 25 watts fast charging support. Inside the box, however, comes with an adapter that's only a 15 watts charger. Still, the charger should charge your phone from 0% to 50% in just about 30 minutes which is pretty decent.

Camera

As mentioned earlier, the A52 has a quad-camera setup.

The main camera is a 64MP with OIS. This is supported by an 8MP Ultra Wide Angle (0.5x zoom),  a 5MP Macro Lens and a Depth Sensor for portraits.

For all of you selfie lovers, the front camera is 32MP.

In terms of video resolution, the Samsung A52 supports 4K UHD videos at 30fps with both the front and back camera.

All in all, this setup is pretty good to see on a mid-range device.

Processor & Gaming

As far as the processor and processing power is concerned, our 4G unit comes with Snapdragon 720G. This Qualcomm processor has reported pretty decent performance that delivers a very stable gaming experience as well as not sweating when it comes to multitasking.

We’re glad to see that the A52 comes with a Snapdragon processor rather than being restricted to Samsung’s very own Exynos processors which are generally not the most power-efficient.

Obviously, if you're playing games such as Call Of Duty, PUBG or Asphalt, you should be okay as this performs pretty well at medium resolution and even higher framerates.

Security & Software/UI

In the department of security and biometrics, Samsung opted for the under-display fingerprint sensor on the A52. Its system is decent; not incredibly fast like the S21 Ultra but it gets the job done. You also have expandable storage up from the base storage.

The UI this phone’s running is the one UI 3.1 based on Android 11 which is what you find on all Samsung devices including the flagships.

How did you find the Samsung Galaxy A52? For a mid-range phone, we think that it’ll satisfy most types of users, especially for users who do not need a high-end device for their day-to-day tasks.
