Netflix is still the best all-round pick for an Android TV box in Malaysia, from RM19.90/month, but no single app covers everything. This guide checked every app and price on 1 October 2026: one pick (Live Football TV HD) had been pulled from the Play Store entirely and is replaced here with Astro GO, and Disney+ is added as a genuine gap in the old list.
Checked by the ProductNation editorial team, 1 October 2026. Prices and app availability verified live on the Google Play Store (Malaysia) the same day. This article contains affiliate links; we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Best for movies and binge-watching: Netflix
2 more points
Price: Free app, subscription from RM19.90/month (Mobile), RM33.90 (Basic), RM55.90 (Standard, HD), RM69.90 (Premium, 4K and 4 screens)
Netflix is still the default pick for most Malaysian households with an Android TV box, and after September 2026's price hike it now runs from RM19.90 (Mobile, phone and tablet only) to RM69.90 (Premium, 4K with 4 screens).
The Basic plan at RM33.90/month is the usual sweet spot for a single TV: HD picture, one screen, no ads.
Best free Android TV box app: iflix
1 more point
Price: Free, or VIP from RM8.90/month (RM74.90/year)
iflix is one of the few genuinely free options on this list: a large share of its catalogue, including sports replays, needs no payment at all.
VIP unlocks the rest for RM8.90 a month or RM74.90 a year, cheaper than a single Netflix Mobile plan.
Best music streaming app: Spotify
3 more points
Price: Free with ads, Premium Individual RM17.50/month, Duo RM24.50, Family RM27.90, Student RM9.50
Spotify remains the easiest way to get music onto an Android TV box, and its 2025 price rise puts Premium Individual at RM17.50/month.
A Duo plan (two accounts, RM24.50) or Family (up to six, RM27.90) usually works out cheaper per person than paying for Individual twice.
Best for Korean dramas: Viu
2 more points
Price: Free with ads, or Premium from RM9.90 (30-day telco add-on) to RM37.90/month (direct, no contract)
This Hong Kong-based platform is still the strongest pick here for Korean content, free or paid.
Pricing has split into two paths: sign up directly through the app for RM37.90/month with no contract, or add it as a Maxis/CelcomDigi bundle from RM9.90 for 30 days if you already hold one of those lines.
Best for Chinese and Asian dramas: Viki
1 more point
Price: Free with ads, Viki Pass Standard around RM20/month (USD 4.99, billed in USD)
Rakuten-owned Viki specialises in Asian drama, Chinese and Taiwanese titles especially, which Netflix and Viu cover more thinly.
Viki Pass Standard is billed at USD 4.99/month, roughly RM20 at today's exchange rate, for ad-free HD streaming and first access to Viki Originals.
Best for sports scores and news: ESPN
1 more point
Price: Free to download and use
Worth being upfront here: ESPN+, the paid live-streaming tier Americans use for games, is not available to Malaysian accounts. What you get on an Android TV box is the free ESPN app, scores, standings, highlight clips and sports news across football, basketball, tennis and more.
If live football on your TV box is what you actually want, that is Astro GO below, not ESPN.
Best for live football and Malaysian TV: Astro GO
2 more points
Price: Free app, needs an active Astro TV package (from RM39.99/month) to unlock live channels
Replaces an app that has been pulled from the Play Store entirely. For actual live football in Malaysia, the rights sit with Astro, not with any of the generic "Live Football TV" apps that used to circulate.
Astro GO puts those channels on an Android TV box without a satellite dish, as long as you are already paying for an Astro TV package (from RM39.99/month).
Best for PC game streaming: Steam Link
1 more point
Price: Free
Steam Link streams games from a gaming PC to an Android TV box for free. Install the app, pair a controller, and connect to Steam running on your computer.
For a smooth experience, stick to wired ethernet or a 5GHz Wi-Fi network; 2.4GHz tends to lag.
Best for free live TV and extreme sports: Red Bull TV
3 more points
Price: Free
Red Bull TV covers motocross, climbing, biking, dance and music events, hosted by Red Bull, entirely free.
Its Live TV feature is the standout: a dedicated channel of live competitions you can just leave running.
Best for live game streaming: Twitch
3 more points
Price: Free, optional paid Subscriptions and Bits to support streamers
Twitch is still the home of live game streaming, and the free tier covers watching, chatting and reacting in full.
Paying for a channel Subscription or sending Bits is optional, purely to support the streamer, not required to watch.
Best all-in-one media centre: Kodi
1 more point
Price: Free, open source
Kodi is a free, open-source media centre that pulls together everything on your home network, and whatever add-ons you install, into one interface.
It is the most flexible app on this list, but also the one that rewards spending ten minutes on setup.
Best file manager: Cx File Explorer
4 more points
Price: Free
For organising whatever you have downloaded onto the box itself, Cx File Explorer handles browsing, copying, compressing and sharing files, internal or external storage, for free and without ads.
Its storage analysis view is genuinely useful for working out what is eating your box's space.
Best VPN for geo-blocked content: ExpressVPN
1 more point
Price: From RM14/month (USD 3.49, 2-year plan, billed upfront); month-to-month runs closer to USD 12.99
Bypass geo-blocking with a VPN, and ExpressVPN remains one of the more reliable choices for an Android TV box.
The advertised low price (about RM14/month) only applies if you commit to the 2-year plan upfront; paying monthly costs closer to USD 12.99, nearer RM53.
Best for mirroring an iPhone or iPad: AirScreen
1 more point
Price: Free (limited), Basic from RM6/month removes ads and daily caps
AirScreen lets Apple device owners mirror saved videos or music to an Android TV box, install it only on the box, not on the iPhone.
The free tier is usable but capped (30 minutes of Google Cast a day); Basic, from about RM6/month, removes the cap and the ads.
Best for Disney, Marvel and Star Wars: Disney+
2 more points
Price: Basic RM29.90/month (1080p, with ads), Premium RM49.90/month (4K, Dolby Atmos, ad-free)
A genuine gap in the old version of this guide: Disney+ rebranded from Disney+ Hotstar in Malaysia and is now one of the most-subscribed apps on this list.
Since 18 December 2025 pricing runs RM29.90/month for Basic (1080p, ads) or RM49.90/month for Premium (4K, Dolby Atmos, no ads).
How We Chose These Apps
Every app on this list was confirmed live on the Google Play Store (Malaysia) on 1 October 2026, we do not list anything we could not find and install ourselves. We dropped Live Football TV HD because it no longer exists on the Play Store, and we were upfront about ESPN: its live-streaming tier (ESPN+) is not actually sold to Malaysian accounts, so we labelled it for scores and news only rather than overselling it. Pricing is quoted from each service's own Malaysia pricing page or, where billing is in USD (Viki) or the price depends on contract length (ExpressVPN), we said so rather than hiding it behind a single RM figure.
Installing Apps on an Android TV Box in Malaysia
Most of these apps install directly from the Google Play Store if your box runs stock Android TV or Android with Play Store access. Generic "Android box" units sold without Google certification may need the APK sideloaded instead, download from the developer's own site or the Amazon Appstore, never from a random APK mirror. Astro GO and Disney+ both stream in HD or better, so a wired ethernet connection or a 5GHz Wi-Fi band will matter more than the box's own specs once you are running two or three of these apps regularly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a satellite dish to use Astro GO on an Android TV box?
No. Astro GO streams over the internet, not satellite, so it works on any Android TV box with a working internet connection. You still need an active Astro TV subscription (from RM39.99/month) to unlock live channels; the app itself is free to download.
Can I watch ESPN+ live sports in Malaysia?
Not through the ESPN app directly, ESPN+ is not sold to Malaysian accounts. The free ESPN app still gives scores, highlights and news. For live football in Malaysia, Astro GO is the app that actually carries the broadcast rights.
Is Kodi legal to use in Malaysia?
Kodi itself is free, open-source software and is legal to install and use. What matters is what you watch through it: streaming or downloading copyrighted content without a licence is not legal regardless of which app you use.
Which of these apps are completely free?
Steam Link, Red Bull TV, Twitch, Kodi and Cx File Explorer cost nothing with no paid tier. iflix, Viu, Spotify, Viki, ESPN and AirScreen have usable free tiers with a paid upgrade; Netflix, Astro GO, Disney+ and ExpressVPN require payment to use meaningfully.
Change Note
Updated 1 October 2026: removed Live Football TV HD (delisted from the Google Play Store, confirmed dead) and replaced it with Astro GO, the app that actually holds Malaysia's live football broadcast rights. Replaced Google Chrome with Disney+, a major app missing from the original list. Refreshed every price: Netflix (now RM19.90 to RM69.90 after the September 2026 hike), Spotify (RM17.50 Individual), iflix (RM8.90/month), ExpressVPN (from RM14/month on the 2-year plan), AirScreen (Basic from RM6/month). Fixed two self-contradictions where the headline price and the body text disagreed (Viu, Viki). Relabelled ESPN to be clear that ESPN+ live streaming is not sold in Malaysia.
