Nothing has released Nothing OS 5.0, the next major version of its Android software, and it is the company's biggest update so far. The London-based brand revealed it today, Tuesday 25 August at 6:00pm Malaysian time, with more than 80 changes built on top of Android 17. This is the full launch, not the save-the-date the company teased earlier this month.
The pitch, in Nothing's own words, is about more control, personalisation and fun. In practice that means a home screen you can bend to your own taste, a set of new tools built around the brand's Glyph identity, and an artificial intelligence layer that now does more of the work on the phone itself.

A home screen that takes its colour from your wallpaper
The headline change is visual. Nothing OS 5.0 introduces a redesigned home-screen theme that pulls its colour from your wallpaper, tinting icons, widgets and the Quick Settings panel to match. Widgets can now go transparent, there is a new 1x1 Quick Settings tile that borrows the wallpaper's primary colour, and you can multi-select items to rearrange the home screen in one pass rather than one icon at a time.
Nothing has also switched to the Geist typeface and refreshed the status bar, Settings, Camera and Gallery, with new sorting and an album view in Gallery. The lock screen gains two new clock faces, called Gooey and Micrographics, that colour themselves to sit with your wallpaper. It is a lot of small choices adding up to a phone that looks more like yours and less like everyone else's.
New widgets, and a proper home for Glyph
Two widgets are new. Collector builds a visual collection from your Camera and Gallery, and Away Time tracks how long you have spent off the phone. Nothing has also given its signature Glyph lights a dedicated app, alongside a new Glyph Timer widget, so the light strip on the back of the phone is easier to actually use rather than just admire.
Essential AI does more on the device
Nothing's Essential AI features have grown. Essential Voice is faster, formats its transcriptions better, works in real time and can capture audio through the SuperMic in the Ear (3) case. Essential Space adds Smart Collections and support for Model Context Protocol, the emerging standard for letting AI assistants talk to other apps and tools. There is Essential Key capture, and an Essential Apps Builder that lets you make simple apps on the device with no code. The direction is clear: keep more of the intelligence on the phone rather than sending everything to a server.
What Android 17 adds underneath
Because OS 5.0 is built on Android 17, it inherits Google's newest changes too. The notification shade now splits in two, with Notifications on a swipe from the left and Quick Settings on a swipe from the right. Cross-platform Quick Share lets you send files to an iPhone or another Android phone by scanning a QR code. There are camera, microphone and location privacy indicators, Noto 3D emoji, an expanded dark theme, a separate volume slider for the assistant, brighter HDR and a redesigned Recents screen.
Faster on the phone you already own
A good chunk of the work is under the surface. Nothing lists quicker touch response, better retention of apps in the background, on-device app preloading, overnight memory optimisation and refined animations. Software updates like this are quietly one of the most important things a phone brand does, because they decide how long the device you already own keeps improving. It is the same reason OPPO's recent ColorOS 16 update mattered: no new hardware, but a phone that does a little more than it did the week before. For Malaysian buyers, that value counts for more this year, given how much the price of new phones has climbed in 2026.
When you can get it
The Nothing OS 5.0 open beta rolls out on Wednesday 26 August at 11:00 BST, starting with the Phone (3), and more eligible devices will follow on their own dates listed in Nothing's media kit.
