Sime Motors Opens BYD Mansion Macalister in Penang

Sime Motors restores a century-old Macalister Road landmark into Malaysia's first BYD heritage-concept showroom, with four EVs, a service centre and a 60kW fast charger.

Penang now has a BYD showroom unlike anything else in Malaysia. Sime Motors has turned a century-old Macalister Road landmark into BYD Mansion Macalister, the country's first heritage-concept dealership for the Chinese EV brand.

What opened on 15 May

The grand launch was officiated by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, with H'ng Mooi Lye, the state executive councillor for Local Government and Town and Country Planning, in attendance. The event brought together senior leadership from BYD and Sime Motors, including BYD vice president Liu Xueliang, who is also general manager of BYD's Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division; BYD Malaysia managing director Jacob Ma; BYD Sime Motors managing director Adeline Lew; and Sime Motors's Jeffrey Gan and Vi Thim Juan.

The site spans 26,000 square feet of grounds with 9,000 square feet of built-up space. Inside, four curated BYD models sit on gallery-style display, with private lounges and a dedicated delivery suite that turns handovers into something closer to a milestone than a transaction. A full in-house service centre runs five work bays, an alignment bay and three reception bays, so owners can have everything done on site without travelling back to the Klang Valley.

A charging hub anchors the property with a 60kW DC fast charger plus seven AC chargers, giving Penang owners somewhere reliable to top up while running errands in the city.

Why BYD Mansion Macalister matters

Auto retail in Malaysia tends to default to glass-box plazas tucked into industrial fringes. Sime Motors went the other way for Penang, restoring a century-old commercial landmark on Macalister Road instead of building from scratch. The architecture is preserved, the gallery interior is calm, and the showroom reads more like a small museum than a typical dealership floor.

For BYD, the move signals confidence that buyers in the northern region will turn up for the brand. The event also marked Sime Motors's 5,000th BYD owner in the north, a milestone suggesting EV adoption in Malaysia is no longer only a Klang Valley story. That matters for buyers in Kedah and Perak as much as in Penang, because dealer presence and service depth tend to follow critical mass.

What it means for buyers

Customers in Penang and the surrounding states get sales, service and charging under one roof, plus a setting that frames the car as a considered purchase rather than a transaction. The four display cars rotate across BYD's current lineup, so walking in tells you what is on offer without needing to scroll a configurator. Test drives, financing, and after-sales work all happen on the same site.

Sime Darby Beyond Auto, the authorised retail partner for BYD under Sime Motors, has been with the brand since December 2022. BYD Mansion Macalister is the latest visible commitment to that partnership, and a clear bet that the heritage-concept approach can become a template rather than a one-off experiment.

The takeaway

BYD Mansion Macalister gives Penang a flagship that treats EV ownership as a long-term relationship rather than a one-off sale. If the northern region shows up the way Sime Motors and BYD are betting, more heritage-concept dealerships could follow in other Malaysian cities.
