20 years ago in Malaysia, nobody would've thought that everyone having a car as their primary transportation would cause traffic problems. It is with this that we should always consider public transportation to help take care of not just our roads, but also the air in our living spaces.
Unfortunately, that's easier said than done. So while officials are doing their best to update the traffic and the public transportation system, we citizens should do our part and best to reduce using our cars and bigger vehicles.
Aside from hosting Car-Free days (Kuala Lumpur has it every first and third Sunday of the month), brands like Beam, a Singapore-based e-vehicle service company, have set up e-scooters for Malaysian individuals to use and commute around the city.
Our team first tried these scooters in 2022 and has ridden them many times since, around Kuala Lumpur. Is travelling around KL, Malaysia safe on Beam Scooters, and what does it actually cost? Here's our review.
How We Reviewed This
We rode Beam e-scooters around Kuala Lumpur to test it end to end: unlocking a scooter by QR code, how the ride feels on different pavements, whether the in-app price matched what we were actually charged at the end of the ride, how the app handles parking and ending a ride, and how easy it was to find an available scooter nearby. This is a hands-on usage review, not a lab test. Your own experience can vary by city and by how many scooters Beam has deployed in your area on a given day.
How To Start Using Beam Scooters?
Before we talk about our Beam Scooter review and experience, here's a quick rundown on getting started.
- Download the Beam app from the Apple App Store / Play Store. Upon app startup, verify your mobile phone number.
- Then, confirm your payment method. Ensure that your mobile's Bluetooth is turned on.
- To start, choose "ride" and scan the QR code on the e-scooter handlebar to unlock the e-scooter, or select the '<>' icon in the app and enter the 5-digit code.
- Kick-off twice, then press "GO" after the e-scooter is in motion. If you want to slow down, pull the brake handle on the left side of the handlebar.
- DO NOT try and slow down by pushing down on the rear fender of the e-scooters with your foot. This will damage the e-scooter and can cause you to lose control.
- Park the e-scooter safely at one of the Beam parking spots marked on the map in the app, and position it in the spot where it will not interfere with traffic, pedestrian walkways and fire hydrants. You will be charged a convenience fee of RM 5 if you do not park at a Beam parking spot.
- To end your ride, click on the "end ride" button at the bottom of your screen.

Note that in Malaysia, for safety reasons they cannot be used on main roads connected to the highways. Therefore, please stick to paths such as sidewalks, parks and footpaths.

Beam Scooter App:
Worry not as the app has everything you’ll need. You get a map of your surrounding area. to locate a scooter. To use them, you will also use the app to scan the QR code on a scooter. Upon being prompted, take a quick photo at the end of the ride.
For your convenience, you can even reserve a scooter 15 minutes ahead or set up group rides with your friends.
Beam's Scooters:
Pricing has moved since our first ride in 2022, when Beam charged one flat RM0.60 per minute nationwide with no unlock fee. Beam now prices by zone: typically an unlock fee of RM1.50 to RM2.50 plus RM0.45 to RM0.65 per minute (last checked 3 October 2026), rather than one rate across the country. Moving on; for most parts, the scooter feels comfortable and certainly much safer to ride than an electric skateboard or even a regular scooter. The wheels and scooter's construction fare well on roads. Depending on the type of pathway, rides can be bumpy. Otherwise, everything feels smooth.
Speeds on tar roads can go up to 26Km/h. For the brakes, they feel good too. Plus, the scooters have headlights which makes them safe to ride on at night as well. There's even a handy bell to get people off the road.
How Much Does a Beam Scooter Cost in Kuala Lumpur?
In Kuala Lumpur, a Beam ride is charged in two parts: an unlock fee charged the moment you scan the QR code, and a per-minute rate charged for as long as you are riding. Based on what we and other riders have measured, KL's unlock fee runs from about RM1.50 to RM2.50, and the per-minute rate from about RM0.45 to RM0.65, depending on the zone you start in and any promotion running that day. A short 10-minute hop across the city centre typically costs somewhere between RM6 and RM9 all in.
Beam does not publish one fixed nationwide price list, so the number that actually matters is the one the app shows you before you tap "unlock". Always check it there: it can change by location, by time of day and when a promotion is running.
Things to Know Before You Ride: A Quick Guide
Is Beam Cheaper Than Grab or a Taxi?
For a short hop of a few hundred metres to about a kilometre, a Beam ride (roughly RM6 to RM9 for 10 minutes) usually beats a Grab or taxi fare, which carries its own base fare before distance is even counted. Past that distance, or with more than one person travelling together, e-hailing or public transport works out cheaper per person.
Can I Ride a Beam Scooter on the Highway?
No. For safety, Beam scooters cannot be used on main roads connected to highways in Malaysia. Stick to sidewalks, parks, footpaths and the routes marked inside the app.
What Happens If I Don't Park at a Beam Spot?
You'll be charged a convenience fee of RM5 on top of your ride. The app marks approved parking spots on the map; use one of those, and avoid blocking traffic, pedestrian walkways and fire hydrants.
Are There Any Beam Promo Codes Right Now?
Our original promo code from this review's first publication in 2022 (redeemable until 31 October 2022) has long expired, and we are not aware of a current, verified replacement code, so we are not printing one here rather than guess. Beam runs its own credit bundles and occasional promo codes inside the app, usually under Account or Promotions; check there for whatever is live when you ride.
Is Beam Worth It?
For short trips inside a city centre, getting to a train station, or a quick hop to meet friends nearby, yes. It's a genuinely fun and fast way to cover the last kilometre or two, and the app makes unlocking and parking straightforward. It's not a substitute for longer journeys or regular highway travel, where a car, e-hailing or public transport remains the better option, and the per-minute pricing means it can add up quickly if you sit idle mid-ride without ending it.
