Beam Scooter Review in Malaysia; Finally Got To Try This E-Scooter. Was It Worth It?

With the current price per minute charge, is it worth it?

20 years ago in Malaysia, nobody would've thought that everyone having a car as their primary transportation would cause traffic problems. It is with this that we should always consider public transportation to help take care of not just our roads, but also the air in our living spaces.

Unfortunately, that's easier said than done. So while officials are doing their best to update the traffic and the public transportation system, we citizens should do our part and best to reduce using our cars and bigger vehicles.

Aside from hosting Car-Free days (Kuala Lumpur has it every first and third Sunday of the month), brands like Beam, a Singapore-based E-vehicle service company, have set up e-scooters for Malaysian individuals to use and commute around the city.

Very recently, our team managed to try these scooters. Is travelling around KL, Malaysia safe on Beam Scooters? Here's our brief review.

How To Start Using Beam Scooters?

Before we talk about our Beam Scooter review and experience, here's a quick rundown on getting started.

  1. Download the Beam app from the Apple App Store / Play Store. Upon app startup, verify your mobile phone number.
  2. Then, confirm your payment method. Ensure that your mobile's Bluetooth is turned on.
  3. To start, choose "ride" and scan the QR code on the e-scooter handlebar to unlock the e-scooter, or select the '<>' icon in the app and enter the 5-digit code.
  4. Kick-off twice, then press "GO" after the e-scooter is in motion. If you want to slow down, pull the brake handle on the left side of the handlebar.
  5. DO NOT try and slow down by pushing down on the rear fender of the e-scooters with your foot. This will damage the e-scooter and can cause you to lose control.
  6. Park the e-scooter safely at one of the Beam parking spots marked on the map in the app, and position it in the spot where it will not interfere with traffic, pedestrian walkways and fire hydrants. You will be charged a convenience fee of RM 5 if you do not park at a Beam parking spot.
  7. To end your ride, click on the "end ride" button at the bottom of your screen.

Our Beam Scooter Review - Malaysia

Watch to learn about our Beam Scooter experience!

Note that in Malaysia, for safety reasons they cannot be used on main roads connected to the highways. Therefore, please stick to paths such as sidewalks, parks and footpaths.

Despite the seemingly limited use, our video editor managed to get a lot of their time with the Beam scooters, which were easy and simple to use.

Beam Scooter App:

Worry not as the app has everything you’ll need. You get a map of your surrounding area. to locate a scooter. To use them, you will also use the app to scan the QR code on a scooter. Upon being prompted, take a quick photo at the end of the ride.

For your convenience, you can even reserve a scooter 15 minutes ahead or set up group rides with your friends.

Beam's Scooters:

For your reference, Beam charges RM0.60 per scooter ride per minute as soon as you start the service.

Moving on; for most parts, the scooter feels comfortable and certainly much safer to ride than an electric skateboard or even a regular scooter. The wheels and scooter's construction fare well on roads. Depending on the type of pathway, rides can be bumpy. Otherwise, everything feels smooth.

Speeds on tar roads can go up to 26Km/h. For the brakes, they feel good too. Plus, the scooters have headlights which makes them safe to ride on at night as well. There's even a handy bell to get people off the road.

Beam Scooter Promo Code (Malaysia)

Just to recap, Beam Scooters, charges RM0.60 per minute without any unlocking fee.

While that seems like an expensive fee, think about it when you compare it with e-hailing services which can go beyond RM10 for a 10-minute walk. If it's the scooter, it'll be about half of that!

In short, Beam Scooters are perfect for people who wanna travel short-medium distances be it to get to the train station or hang out with friends at a cafe nearby. Especially during traffic peak hours or when e-hailing services are unfavourable, Beam is a great secondary public transportation option.
