During the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event last week, Google announced that the Wear OS will be getting a revamped Play Store and better Google Maps support, including offline Google Maps, later this year.
As the newest lineup in Samsung’s smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch 5 and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro come with One UI 4.5 that is based on Wear OS 3.5. Right now, you still need to tether your smartwatch to your smartphone for navigation, but with the upcoming update, you’ll soon be able to use your Watch 5 or Watch 5 Pro even if left your phone at home.
Alongside the Google Maps revamp, the Play Store will also be seeing major changes to better reflect the one we see on smartphones. Later this year on an unspecified date, Wear OS will be offering personalized recommendations and new trending apps.
Samsung has also managed to talk Google into including support for Soundcloud and Deezer so that music lovers will be able to listen to music locally on smartwatches too.
