FAQ:
- How to clean an electric kettle?
As with all kitchen appliances, your electric kettle is undoubtedly going to get dirty, regardless of how you’re using it. If you don’t clean it, the kettle will have built-up grime and gunk which can cause unknown (and often times harmful) substances to pollute the water, potentially causing sickness upon consumption.
The process of cleaning an electric kettle is usually called “descalling”, and all you need to keep your kettle squeaky clean is just a few simple steps.
You’ll need:
- White vinegar
- Toothbrush (or a soft sponge)
- Microfiber cloth
- Dish soap
Step 1
Remove any filters or cartilages from the kettle. Not every electric kettle has one, but if they do then it’s usually found near the spout. Soak the filter/cartridge in a mixture of equal parts warm water and vinegar to remove any gunk.
Step 2
Fill the kettle up halfway with equal amounts of water and vinegar, and let it come up to a boil before unplugging it from the power outlet.
Step 3
Allow the hot water and vinegar mixture to sit for 20 minutes before pouring it out. During this process, the steam and heat from the kettle will loosen up any mold or build-up on the inside.
Step 4
Scrub the inside using a soft sponge or toothbrush to remove any mineral build up or mold from the sides, then thoroughly rinse the kettle with fresh water and bringing it back to a boil. Repeat this process as many times necessary.
Step 5
Once you’re done, place the filter back in once the kettle has cooled down. All that’s left is to clean the exterior by wiping a damp cloth dipped in soapy water, and to clean the base with a simple wipe of a damp towel.
Pro tip: If the gunk just ain’t coming out and you need more cleaning power, use a small amount of baking soda together with your solution.
And voila! A nice, clean (almost like new) electric kettle sits back on your kitchen counters waiting for the next time you need boiled water.
