Instagram's Edits Is Now Free on Mac in Malaysia. Final Cut Pro Costs RM1,299.90

Instagram's video editor Edits now runs on a Mac, and in Malaysia it costs nothing. The Edits desktop page, opened from Malaysia on 6 November, offers a free download for Macs with Apple silicon, meaning an M1 chip or later. Apple's own editor, Final Cut Pro, lists at RM1,299.90 on the Malaysian Mac App Store. That is a price reference for a Mac editor here, not a like-for-like comparison: Final Cut Pro is a professional suite.

Quick facts

  • Price: free, downloaded from the Edits website rather than the Mac App Store.
  • Macs: Apple silicon only (M1 or later). There is no Windows version; the page says Edits is only available on macOS.
  • Sign-in: an Instagram account is required.
  • Export: up to 4K, with no watermark, in several aspect ratios.
  • The file: version 454.0.0.38.112, about 179MB, dated 4 November.

What the Mac version adds

The desktop page lists a multi-track timeline, keyframes for transitions, audio waveforms for cutting on the beat, and colour wheels and curves for grading. You can import your own LUTs and font files, use Instagram's licensed and royalty-free music libraries, generate captions automatically, and publish straight to Instagram without leaving the app.

Edits launched in April 2025 as a phone app; its App Store listing still describes it as a way to make videos "right on their phone". Meta told Engadget it is still working on letting one project move between the phone and the Mac mid-edit, so for now a project started on your iPhone stays there.

How Edits sits in Malaysia today

On Apple's Malaysian App Store, the iPhone version of Edits, released in April 2025, has 2,360 ratings, averaging 4.75 out of 5. CapCut, on the store since April 2020, has 147,036, and Canva, there since October 2014, has 307,814. These are totals collected since each app's release, so the older apps have had years longer to gather them, and ratings are not downloads. Even so, CapCut's count is roughly 62 times Edits'.

We read the same store this week when Adobe's Premiere mobile app had 286 ratings in Malaysia, and when TikTok Shop's standalone app turned up in the Malaysian App Store.

If the footage is the weak link rather than the edit, a music video shot entirely on a phone for no budget is what our Pocket Cinematic course walks through, shot by shot.

Who can use it

The page names an Apple silicon Mac (M1 or later) and an Instagram account; it does not state a minimum macOS version. Owners of older Intel Macs are left out, as are Windows users. Prices and ratings in this story were read on Apple's Malaysian App Store on 6 November 2026.
