Meta's Muse Wonder AI Takes On ChatGPT, Not WhatsApp or Facebook Yet

Meta says its new Muse Wonder AI rivals ChatGPT and Claude. For now it is out for developers, not the Facebook or WhatsApp apps Malaysia runs on.

Meta now has artificial intelligence models it is positioning against the ones behind ChatGPT and Claude. The company released Muse Wonder and a more advanced version, Muse Wonder Full, which it calls its most capable models to date and its entry into the frontier, the industry's top tier of AI. For Malaysia the question worth asking is less about benchmarks than about when, or whether, that intelligence turns up inside the apps people already open.

Meta says the new models perform at a level comparable to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude, as Techxplore reported. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg's own words were that Wonder brings the company "to the frontier," and AI chief Alexandr Wang called it Meta's most capable model yet. Meta also pointed to benchmark figures it highlighted from Artificial Analysis, described in the report as an independent firm, that it says put Wonder ahead of its earlier Spark models and ahead of some models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. Meta lists the Muse family, Wonder along with the smaller Spark and Glimmer, on its AI research site.

For now Wonder is going to developers and paying subscribers through Meta's tools rather than to the general public, according to the reporting on the launch.

Why this matters in Malaysia

The numbers that make this relevant here are about reach. DataReportal's Digital 2026 Malaysia report, drawing on Meta's own advertising figures from late 2025, puts Facebook's reachable audience in Malaysia at about 23.0 million, equal to 63.7 percent of the population. It lists Instagram at 16.1 million and Messenger at 9.6 million, all Meta-owned, and cautions that these are advertising-reach estimates, not counts of separate people, and that they overlap across the apps. Malaysia has 35.4 million internet users on the same report's reckoning.

That scale is why the launch is worth watching from Malaysia, even though Wonder today is limited to developers and paying subscribers, not Meta's big consumer apps Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. The launch announced no rollout to those consumer apps. We have covered OpenAI's own GPT-6 push for phone-first users and Malaysia's move to write a binding AI law; another frontier model in the mix sharpens the same questions about cost, data and who answers when an app gives a wrong reply.

What to watch

The model is out first for developers and paying subscribers, not for the public at large. The open question is whether Meta brings Wonder to its mainstream consumer apps, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. The launch gave no answer.
