U Mobile has named the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) the first academic partner to join its Enterprise Innovation Platform (EIP), a tie-up the telco says is meant to connect university research with industry needs and real-world technology adoption.
Under the agreement, the two sides will work together on academic research, innovation and talent development in 5G connectivity and emerging technologies. U Mobile said the collaboration pairs IIUM's research expertise with its own ULTRA5G network and the EIP's industry and innovation ecosystem, exploring applications powered by 5G-Advanced (5G-A) and artificial intelligence while building capabilities for future technologies including 6G.
The memorandum was exchanged during the University Research and Innovation Investment Summit (URIIS) 2026 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on 22 September 2026. It was represented by U Mobile Chief Financial Officer Sandy Tsang and IIUM Deputy Rector Prof. Dr. Mohamed Aslam Mohamed Haneef, and witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
URIIS 2026 was held under the Ministry of Higher Education and brought universities together with industry to line up research investment. That is the setting U Mobile and IIUM chose to formalise a programme meant to move university work closer to commercial use and to build a pipeline of talent for the country’s next generation of networks.
The EIP is the same platform U Mobile has been building out with outside expertise. Earlier this year it set up an advisory panel for its 5G innovation hub, and IIUM now becomes the first university to sit inside the programme rather than advise it from outside.
The operator has been leaning on its network position to court this kind of partner. U Mobile was named Malaysia's fastest 5G network at 348.73 Mbps, and it is that ULTRA5G footprint the university research is meant to build on.
