Apple's most powerful Mac reaches Malaysian buyers next week. The new Mac Studio, refreshed with the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips Apple announced in August, becomes available in Malaysia on 22 September. On Apple's Malaysian store the M5 Ultra model starts at RM24,999 and the M5 Max at RM10,999.
Those two prices are not like-for-like. Each is the entry point to a different chip: the RM10,999 M5 Max opens with a 32-core GPU, 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage, while the RM24,999 M5 Ultra opens with a 64-core GPU, 96GB and 1TB. The RM14,000 gap buys a different class of machine, not the same one with a bigger number, and that is the part worth sitting with before anyone reaches for the top of the range.
Start with what the M5 Ultra is. On its own tests Apple calls it the most powerful chip it has ever put in a Mac. Apple lists it as scaling to an 80-core GPU, 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth and up to 512GB of unified memory, though the 512GB tier does not ship until late October. Apple says the Mac Studio with M5 Ultra reaches up to 4.3 times the peak AI compute of the M3 Ultra, a figure from Apple's own testing on selected configurations.
That capacity is built for a narrow kind of work: rendering heavy 3D scenes, grading and cutting 8K footage from several cameras at once, running visual-effects pipelines, and holding a large AI model in memory so it runs on the machine instead of in the cloud. The RM24,999 that starts the Ultra range, and the far steeper prices for its bigger memory and storage tiers, buys a level of headroom aimed squarely at that professional end.
Very little everyday editing needs that ceiling, and this is where the cheaper chip earns its place. The M5 Max Mac Studio starts at RM10,999 with a 32-core GPU and 36GB of unified memory, and scales to a 40-core GPU and 128GB. For a single-camera 4K timeline, colour work and the daily load of a solo creator or a small studio, that is a lot of machine. Our read is that the Ultra is a professional-tier tool and the Max is the one most creators should price first. That is a judgement about the workload, not a benchmarked verdict: anyone doing sustained 8K, heavy 3D or on-device AI should weigh the Ultra on their own projects.
Memory is a big reason the ladder climbs the way it does. You choose the memory tier when you buy the machine, so it is worth getting right the first time. It feeds into the price too: we have tracked how RAM and SSD prices moved through this year.
Both models have Thunderbolt 5, which counts if you shift large video files off fast external drives, and both keep the compact Mac Studio shape that tucks under a monitor.
