Sony has announced two new G Master super-telephoto prime lenses for its Alpha full-frame E-mount system, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS, and it is calling each the world's lightest in its category. Both weigh just under a kilogram, which is the whole point of the launch: super-telephoto reach that a photographer can hold and carry rather than one that lives on a tripod.
The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS comes in at roughly 994g and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS at roughly 995g. For lenses that reach 400mm and 600mm, those figures are unusually low, and Sony has shifted each lens's weight balance closer to the camera body so the rig stays steady during handheld framing, panning and tracking. The stated use cases are birds, wildlife and sports, the subjects that move fast and rarely wait for you to set up.
Optics and autofocus built for the long end
Each lens uses an optical design with three Super ED glass elements and one ED element to hold down the chromatic aberration that creeps in at long focal lengths, aiming for sharp detail from the centre of the frame to the edges. Sony's Nano AR Coating II is there to keep ghosting and flare in check in backlit scenes, and an 11-blade circular aperture is meant to give the smooth background blur the G Master line is known for.
Focusing is handled by two XD Linear Motors per lens with a control algorithm tuned specifically for these optics, which Sony says delivers fast, precise and quiet autofocus for fast-moving subjects. Both lenses are fully compatible with the Alpha 9 III and its 120fps continuous shooting with autofocus and auto-exposure tracking, and both carry Sony's Optical SteadyShot stabilisation for handheld work at the long end. Price and availability
Both lenses go on sale from October 2026. Sony lists a Singapore recommended retail price of S$3,749 for the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and S$5,099 for the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS. A Malaysian price and on-sale date have not been announced, so buyers here should check with a local Sony retailer for details rather than read across from the Singapore figures.
