Apple opened iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max pre-orders in Malaysia this month, and the headline prices are the ones everyone repeats: RM5,499 for the iPhone 18 Pro, RM5,999 for the Pro Max. Those are the entry numbers. The interesting number is what Apple charges to move up the storage ladder, because that is where the bill quietly doubles.
We took every storage tier straight from Apple's Malaysian store on 16 September 2026 and worked out the cost of each upgrade. The pattern is remarkably consistent, and it is steep.

The storage ladder
| Model | 256GB | 512GB | 1TB | 2TB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro | RM5,499 | RM6,499 | RM8,499 | RM11,499 |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | RM5,999 | RM6,999 | RM8,999 | RM11,999 |
| iPhone Air | RM5,299 | RM6,299 | RM8,299 | no 2TB |

Look down the columns and the same steps appear on each model that offers them. Doubling from 256GB to 512GB adds RM1,000. Doubling again to 1TB adds RM2,000. On the two Pro models, going from 1TB to 2TB adds RM3,000. The step prices do not change from the cheapest Air to the Pro Max. Add the steps up and on the Pro and Pro Max, the jump from the 256GB base to the 2TB maximum is RM6,000, on top of the phone.
The first upgrade puts a clean number on it: 256GB to 512GB adds RM1,000 for 256 more gigabytes, which is RM3.91 for every extra gigabyte. Each step after that costs more in ringgit than the one before, RM2,000 then RM3,000, even though the phone is otherwise identical.
The comparison that makes it land
That RM6,000 jump from 256GB to 2TB is more than the price of a complete, brand-new phone. Apple still sells the 128GB iPhone 16 in Malaysia at RM3,799. It is also more than the entire base iPhone 18 Pro at RM5,499. Choosing the maximum storage on a Pro Max, in other words, costs more than buying a second iPhone.
Apple has also priced its new foldable, the iPhone Duo, which opens for pre-order at 8pm on 16 October and goes on sale 23 October. Its ladder runs 256GB RM9,499, 512GB RM10,499, 1TB RM12,499, 2TB RM15,499, the same RM1,000, RM2,000 and RM3,000 steps as the rest of the range. At RM15,499 the 2TB Duo carries the highest price in Apple's current Malaysian iPhone line-up.
Why this is not only a luxury question
Some Android phones let you drop in a microSD card to expand storage cheaply. None of these iPhones has a memory-card slot, so Apple's ladder is the only way to add built-in storage, and you choose it once, at the checkout. Buy too little built-in storage and you cannot add more to the phone later.
In our view, the top tiers make the most sense for one use Apple markets directly: video. Apple's own iPhone 18 Pro spec sheet lists 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120 frames a second, ProRes video, and ProRes RAW, formats Apple pitches at filmmakers (it notes the highest ProRes setting, 4K at 120 frames a second, records to external storage). Those formats produce very large files, so anyone shooting them can move through storage quickly. Our reading is that the upper half of this ladder is built with that use in mind, though how fast a phone fills depends entirely on how it is used.
How to check this yourself
Open apple.com/my, go to any iPhone buy page, and read the price against each storage size. Subtract the 256GB price from each higher tier to see the upgrade cost. We did the same for every model above. Prices are Apple's Malaysian sticker prices as at 16 September 2026 and can change.
The limit: these are list prices from Apple's own store, before any trade-in, carrier deal, or promotion, and reseller prices vary. Every figure here comes from one place, Apple Malaysia, and we are comparing Apple's own storage tiers with each other and with Apple's other iPhone prices.
The takeaway for a Malaysian buyer is simple. Decide how much storage you actually need before you are standing at the checkout. On these iPhones, storage is one of the most expensive choices you will make after picking the phone itself, and unlike a case or a charger, it is the one you cannot change later.
