Proton Registered 20,141 Cars in August: Its Biggest Month in Malaysia Since 2005

Proton registered 20,141 cars in Malaysia in August 2026. We counted every Proton registration in the national records back to 2005, and no single month since October 2005 has been bigger. In the twenty years between, through the whole GST era, the pandemic and the tax holidays, Proton never once passed 20,000 registrations in a month.

The figures come from JPJ vehicle registration data published on data.gov.my, which lists every car registered in Malaysia since 2000 by make, model, colour and fuel type. We counted it ourselves. Registrations are not the same as sales, a point we return to at the end, but we use them here as the closest public proxy for what is actually reaching Malaysian roads each month.

The most in a single month since 2005

The last time Proton registered more cars in a single month than it did this August was October 2005, at 23,211 registrations, in a year when the company registered 171,110 cars in total. After that the numbers fell away for two decades. The best Proton managed in the twenty years since was 17,654 in March 2011, and across the eleven years from 2015 to 2025 it never cleared 15,000 in any single month. Its best month in 2025 was 14,970, last October.

August 2026 broke that ceiling by a wide margin. Here is Proton's biggest single month in each of the last few years, so the jump is clear:

The market shrank. Proton grew anyway.

What makes August stand out is that it happened while the overall market was shrinking. Total car registrations in Malaysia fell to 77,276 in August 2026, down 2.1 per cent from 78,970 in August 2025. Perodua, Toyota and Honda, the next three largest brands, all registered fewer cars than a year earlier. Proton went the other way, rising 37.7 per cent year on year.

The gap between Malaysia's two national brands narrowed sharply. In August 2025, Perodua registered 17,401 more cars than Proton. In August 2026 that lead had fallen to 9,281. Proton reached 68.5 per cent of Perodua's volume, up from 45.7 per cent a year earlier. Perodua is still comfortably the country's largest brand, but the distance between them has almost halved in a year.

Where the growth came from

Proton's extra volume came from newer models rather than its long-standing best-seller alone. Comparing the same month a year apart, the Saga remained its most-registered model, rising from 6,052 to 7,319. The bigger movers were the S70 sedan, which more than doubled from 1,210 to 3,235, and the electric e.MAS 5, which Proton did not register at all in August 2025 and which reached 4,770 this August, making it Proton's second most-registered model of the month, ahead of the X50.

In other words, three models did the work. The e.MAS 5, the S70 and the Saga added 8,062 registrations between them year on year, while the X50 and the Persona fell back, for a net gain of 5,516. Without the e.MAS 5 alone, Proton's August would have looked much like any other recent month.

What this does and does not tell us

These are registration figures from JPJ, not sales figures from the manufacturers. A registration can lag a purchase by weeks, and it can reflect fleet orders or dealer stock being put on the road rather than an individual buyer. We use registrations because they are the one measure published for the whole market, but the word matters: this is the most Proton has registered in a month since 2005, not necessarily the most it has ever sold in a month.

August is also a single month. Perodua still registered about 46 per cent more cars than Proton, and the 2026 national file currently runs only to the end of August, so full-year totals are not yet settled. What the record does show is a sharp increase this year: before 2026, Proton had not touched 20,000 registrations in a month for twenty years, and in 2026 it has now come close twice, with 19,750 in January and 20,141 in August. Two strong months are not yet a permanent shift, but they are well outside anything the last two decades produced.
