The first phone with a 2nm chip this year will not be an iPhone. It will be a Google Pixel, arriving weeks ahead of Apple, and it marks the start of the 2nm era in smartphones. For Malaysian readers the shift matters twice over: in the flagships people are about to buy, and in the factories along the country's own chip corridor.

A Google phone gets to 2nm first
Google will hold its Made by Google event on 12 August, where the Pixel 11 line is expected alongside the Pixel Watch 5. The more interesting part sits inside the phone. According to 9to5Google, citing Taiwan's Economic Daily News, the Pixel 11's Tensor G6 will be the first phone chip built on TSMC's 2nm process, beating Apple's iPhone 18 to it by about a month.
That is a break from habit. Apple normally gets a new TSMC process first. This year Google is the launch customer, and Apple's A20, along with the next Qualcomm Snapdragon and MediaTek Dimensity flagships, will follow on the same node into 2027. Notebookcheck reports that TSMC has already begun 2nm mass production, and that the Tensor G6's gains lean toward battery life and on-device AI rather than raw speed.

What it means if you are buying a phone
A smaller process is not really about benchmark bragging. Packing transistors closer together lets a chip do the same work on less power, which shows up as a cooler phone, longer battery life, and more AI running on the device instead of in the cloud. For most people that is a better everyday upgrade than a higher graphics score.
The catch is cost. Leading-edge nodes are more expensive to make, and that pressure tends to reach the shelf. It lands on top of the chip price rises we looked at when Qualcomm confirmed a Snapdragon increase from September. If you are shopping this year, the honest read is that 2026 flagships will be more efficient and probably pricier, while a well-chosen 3nm phone stays more than enough for daily use.
What it means for Malaysia's chip industry
Here is the part local coverage tends to skip. The 2nm wafers themselves are fabricated in Taiwan, not in Malaysia. What Malaysia does, and has done well for decades, is the back end: assembling and testing finished chips, work concentrated in Penang and the Klang Valley. It is a big reason a Pixel or an iPhone can carry a Taiwanese processor that passed through Malaysian hands. The AI boom is now pushing value toward advanced packaging, the step that stitches multiple chips into one high-performing unit.
