For Malaysian drivers weighing an electric car from a home-grown brand, Proton's EV arm has posted a figure that reframes the local option as the one to beat. Proton e.MAS has passed 20,000 vehicle sales in under seven months of 2026, and it now sits as the country's No. 1 xEV brand.

Proton e.MAS passes 20,000 sales in 2026
PRO-NET, the wholly owned PROTON subsidiary behind the e.MAS brand, says the milestone came in less than seven months of the year. In the first half of 2026, e.MAS held 42.6% of Malaysia's electric vehicle (EV) market and 41.8% of the broader xEV market, which counts both fully electric and plug-in hybrid models.
The sales are spread across the brand's three-model range. The entry e.MAS 5 accounts for 60.9% of the total, the e.MAS 7 PHEV plug-in hybrid makes up 23.3%, and the fully electric e.MAS 7 SUV rounds out the remaining 15.8%.
What is driving the numbers
The mix tells its own story. The more affordable e.MAS 5 is doing most of the heavy lifting, which suggests price is still the biggest lever for Malaysians making the switch. The plug-in hybrid e.MAS 7 PHEV taking close to a quarter of sales also points to buyers who want an electrified car without giving up the reassurance of a petrol engine for longer trips.
PRO-NET frames the run as being in step with national policy, including the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), both of which push Malaysia toward cleaner road transport over the coming years.
Where Proton e.MAS sits in the market
Holding more than four in ten EV sales matters because the segment has largely been shaped by imported names since it opened up in Malaysia. A local brand leading on volume changes the calculation for buyers who assumed an EV meant paying import money for an unfamiliar badge. It also gives Proton a nationwide service and charging footprint that newer entrants are still building out.
The next test is holding that lead as rivals expand their line-ups and pricing. Proton has signalled more to come for the range, with the e.MAS story set to feature at KLIMS 2026, the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show.
The takeaway
For anyone shortlisting an electric or plug-in hybrid car in Malaysia this year, the numbers make Proton e.MAS hard to ignore: it is now the volume leader, the range spans three price points, and the brand is backing it with local infrastructure. Whether that lead holds is the thing to watch through the rest of 2026.
