A new foldable smartphone has appeared on the HUAWEI China website, but this isn't just your everyday run-of-the-mill foldable. It's the world's first trifold smartphone with TWO hinges and THREE screens, totalling an impressive screen size of 10.2" when fully unfolded. That's basically a full-sized iPad there!

When folded, the phone can be reduced to a 7.9-inch foldable or even a 6.4-inch bar-style phone. The Mate XT Ultimate’s flexible LTPO OLED display offers a 120 Hz refresh rate and supports 10 billion colors, with a resolution that adapts to the screen configuration. It has a 92% screen-to-body ratio, with a 16:11 configuration when fully unfolded.

Even with the trifold design, the Mate XT still maintains a pretty impressive thinness of 3.6 mm when unfolded and weighs just 298 grams, making it one of the lightest foldables on the market, even lighter than some current book-style foldables.

According to HUAWEI, the Mate XT Ultimate offers three different screen modes to match various tasks:

  • Single-screen mode for daily tasks
  • Dual-screen mode for reading and web browsing
  • Triple-screen mode for work and productivity

On the camera side, the Mate XT Ultimate features a 50 MP main camera with PDAF and OIS, alongside a 12 MP telephoto lens, a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, and a laser autofocus module. The phone also includes an 8 MP front camera embedded in the display’s punch-hole, perfect for selfies even when folded.

The Mate XT Ultimate is equipped with a hinge system inspired by the Tiangong space station, enabling internal and external folds with zero gaps. The hinge is crafted from composite laminate and non-Newtonian fluid materials to unsure maximum durability.

It comes pre-installed with HarmonyOS 4.2, running on 16 GB of RAM, though the exact chipset hasn’t been disclosed. The device also features AI-powered tools such as voice-to-text, automatic split-screen, document translation, and more.

The 5,600 mAh battery is split into three silicone-carbide cells, supporting 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.

The HUAWEI Mate XT is currently only available in the Chinese market, with no mention of its global launch. Available in Black or Red with striking gold accents, the Mate XT Ultimate is pretty expensive, with the 256 GB model starting at CNY¥19,999 (~RM12,195.73) and going up to CNY¥23,999 (~RM14,635) for the 1 TB version.
