Samsung’s 200-Megapixel Image Sensor Is Here, And We Should Be Seeing It Soon

Taking camera smartphones to the next level.

One of the biggest rumours about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 Series is that the camera setup on the new flagship smartphone will come with a whopping 200-megapixel sensor. If true, this will make the Samsung Galaxy S23 series one of the best camera smartphones on the market, surpassing even its own predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which only sports a 108-megapixel main camera.

Just recently, Samsung introduced its latest 200MP image sensor, the ISOCELL HP2, which harnesses the brand’s high-resolution image sensor technologies to improve pixel technology and better capacity for stunning mobile images. And most excitingly, it will be coming in “tomorrow’s premium smartphones”, according to the press release. If that doesn’t mean the Galaxy S23, then what else could it be?

The ISOCELL HP2 retains the current size that is used for 108MP sensors but packs 200 million 0.6 micrometre pixels, allowing for better mobile camera performance without having to bulk up the camera module. This makes sense, as several leaked renders of the Galaxy S23 series have shown that the design and camera module on the phones are almost identical to the current Galaxy S22 Series.

Besides that, Samsung has harnessed the Tetrapixel technology to add versatility to the camera so that it can accommodate varying lighting conditions. In low light conditions, the sensor will adjust according to produce stunning pictures.

On the other hand, brightly lit environments are also less washed out thanks to Samsung’s new Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) technology that reduces overexposure and enhances colour reproduction.

The ISOCELL HP2 uses all 200-million pixels in its auto-focusing capability, enabled by Super QPD. This will allow the camera to recognise vertical and horizontal pattern changes so that it can focus on the right thing quickly and accurately, even in a dimly lit environment.

Samsung says that the HP2 sensor has entered mass production, so it’s highly likely that we’ll be seeing it in the next Galaxy smartphones as soon as next week, since that’s when Samsung will be holding its flagship launch event, Galaxy Unpacked 2023. The event is scheduled for 2 February 2023, 2 am Malaysia time.
