Dyson Brings To Life Air Purifying Headphones in the Shape of Dyson Zone

Can we solve both air and noise pollution with just one device? Apparently, yes.

With urban pollution and the pandemic breathing over our shoulders (pun intended), clean air is getting harder and harder to come by. More than half the global population lives in cities, which means that almost all of us are exposed to some degree of pollution — both air and noise.

While home air purifiers only solve part of that problem, with the added inconvenience of non-mobility, Dyson has come up with a solution for both pollutions: the Dyson Zone headphones, which is capable of providing a pure, immersive listening experience and on-the-go air purification when you need it.

Bourne of six years of research and development as well as Dyson’s 30 years of expertise in airflow, filtration, and motors technologies, the Dyson Zone headphones are engineered to tackle both noise and air pollution that are rampant in cities.

Dyson Zone Specs

  • Speaker: 40mm neodymium magnet
  • Active Noise Cancellation: Up to 38dB

  • Filter efficiency: PM0.1, 99%; NO2, SO2, O3
  • Filter Life: up to 12 months
  • Battery Life: up 50 hrs (audio only), up to 4 hrs with air purification on

How Does the Dyson Zone Work?

There are compressors in each earcup on the Dyson Zone that draws air through the dual-layer filters and project two streams of purified air to the user’s nose and mouth, channelled through the non-contact detachable visor. The filters are able to capture 99% of particle pollution including particles as small as 0.1 microns. At the same time, potassium-enriched filters dubbed as K-Carbon filters target excessive acidic gases that are most prevalent in city pollution.

On the audio side, the Dyson Zone can deliver high-fidelity, immersive audio with ultra-low distortion and a broad frequency range for clarity across all tonal ranges. There’s also an extra microphone for telephony, which means the user can make phone calls, record audio, and use voice control. The microphone combines with the feed-forward ANC microphone to provide beamforming capabilities, allowing the user to receive greater clarity of voice transmission without excessive background noise.

Contrary to common industry practice where manufacturers mould listening experiences according to one expert, Dyson opted for a more scientific approach using audio research and extensive user training. The headphones are packed with features based on audio research:

  • Ultra-low distortion: Everything in the headphones has been carefully designed to minimise distortion. The driver output is further equalised by intelligent signal processing 48,000 times a second, which combines with noise cancellation to neutralise the harmonic distortion.
  • Advanced noise cancelling: ANC is hardly a new technology, but the Dyson Zone ANC system goes above and beyond by featuring 11 microphones, eight of which monitor surrounding zones. The Dyson Zone provides up to 38 dB of noise cancellation.
  • Full-spectrum audio: The Dyson Zone can reproduce frequencies beyond human hearing, which makes for a robust and clear audio experience. This board frequency range is achieved through the electroacoustic engineering system, including the 40mm, 16-ohm, neodymium speaker drivers at the heart of the entire system.
  • Scientific tuning: Through scientific metrics and thorough user trialling, the Dyson Zone is equipped with the clearest and most detailed specification, thanks to a unique EQ setting that optimises the frequency curve for clear, pure audio across the full audible frequency range.
  • Ultimate comfort: From the clamping force of the headband to the geometry and material of the detachable visor, the Dyson Zone is made for optimal comfort.

Connectivity & App

The Dyson Zone is controlled by the MyDyson app. Adjust airflow speed and noise-cancellation mode as well as adapt the audio equalization to your preference. There are three modes to choose from: Dyson EQ, Bass Boost, and Neutral. You can also opt-in to loudness limit to protect aural health.

In other good news, Dyson has run the Dyson Zone through rigorous testing, as they have with all their other machines. Engineered by teams across the UK, Singapore, Malaysia, and China, the software development was focused in Southeast Asia locations, with the Dyson Malaysia Development Centre integral to much of the extreme testing thanks to the natural climate that allows the Dyson Zone to be tested in warmer climates and higher humidity in conjunction with UK-based testing. User trials have also been conducted in our local climates, so interested Malaysians can rest assured that the noise-cancelling, air-purifying headphones will not be out of place for our climate.
