7 Reasons to Get a Mid-Range vs High-End Smartphone in 2024

There are many reasons why you should go for a mid-range, besides the price.

When it comes to choosing between a mid-range and high-end phone, the most obvious difference between them clearly comes down to pricing. But what exactly is it that you’re getting from a flagship that makes it worth literally twice the price of a mid-range phone?

That’s what we aim to answer today by taking a closer examination at Samsung’s latest mid-range offering - the Samsung Galaxy A73 5G, which offers a massive 5000mAh battery that will last you the whole day, as well as a powerful Snapdragon processor that can handle any app or game you throw at it. And, it only costs RM2,099!

Reason 1: Design Isn’t Sacrificed

Mid-range phones are now designed with the same philosophy as even some of their pricier high-end counterparts, becoming sleeker and thinner whilst still maintaining that affordable price. Take the Galaxy A73 5G for example, with its minimalistic yet still tasteful design, coming in a variety of colourways to suit your personal tastes.

Still, it’s not all good news when it comes to modern mid-range phones. Although they may aesthetically look good, they often use plastic as their main casing material instead of the more premium Gorilla Glass and aluminium frame you would usually find in flagships like the Galaxy S22. If you do fancy lightweight phones, then they are perfect!

Reason 2: They Have Good Cameras Too!

The gap between the mid-range and flagships is getting smaller and smaller with every new release, and to see that you just have to compare their cameras.

Although their hardware and megapixels are often different, when you’re comparing the same shot taken on a mid-range and a flagship, chances are you’d be hard-pressed to differentiate them.

Although it’s incorrect to judge the quality of a camera entirely by its megapixels, you can’t help but just be impressed by the Galaxy A73’s 108MP main camera. In fact, it actually only exists on one other Samsung phone - the Galaxy S22 Ultra, a phone which costs twice as much as the Galaxy A73.

Reason 3: They Have Just As Good Processors

Raw processing power is the one area where flagships shine but do they actually matter? On paper, the Galaxy S22’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 definitely beats out the Snapdragon 778G found on the Galaxy A73. But in practical uses? It’s basically like comparing the speed of a Ferrari and Myvi in a traffic jam.

Whether it’s scrolling Instagram, watching YouTube videos, or chatting with your friends, you won’t be able to tell the difference between a flagship processor and a mid-range one. And although a low-end processor might have trouble with it, a mid-range processor can handle multitasking just as well as a high-end one.

Even gaming feels similar, with the exception of playing on higher graphics settings for a few demanding titles like Genshin Impact. That’s when you truly start to feel the true power of a flagship processor like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Otherwise, you’re better off sticking with a processor like the Snapdragon 778G, and for more reasons than you might think.

Reason 4: Robust Battery Life

A powerful processor will give you better performance, sure, but it will cost you. Flagship processors are notorious for being power-hungry machines, eating away at your battery even when doing small, idle tasks. This is especially made worse when you have a relatively small battery capacity.

That’s why, in real-life testing, phones like the mid-range Samsung Galaxy A73, with its low-power Snapdragon 778G and 5000mAh battery, can easily outlast the Samsung Galaxy S22, which only had a 3700mAh capacity whilst also being powered by the powerful yet consuming Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Reason 5: Cheap Storage

One thing you’re not likely to find in a flagship smartphone that you would in a mid-range is a microSD card slot. Phones like the Samsung Galaxy A73 allow you to expand your storage without needing to pay an absurd amount for upgraded onboard storage.

Reason 6: Now with Continuous Updates Too

One common argument against mid-range smartphones was their limited support; how they would always get fewer major updates than their high-end counterparts.

But ever since Samsung announced they would support all Galaxy phones with at least four years of major Android updates, that argument has been thrown out the window.

Now, your mid-range phone can last just as long as the flagship that came out in the same year.

Reason 7: Better Pricing Overall

Moving on to the most obvious reason why you should consider getting a mid-range, their price. While the value of Flagships is often subjective, mid-range phones mostly come with a sure-good-value if you count the price-to-performance ratio.

The most feature-packed model of the Galaxy A73 5G, which comes with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, costs only RM,2099. Whereas the base model of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, on the other hand, has 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM will cost RM4099. While the Galaxy S22 Ultra is a powerful machine that will appeal to many, it’s not a price that everyone can afford.
