Sony's ECM-W5 Wireless Mic Lands at S$550 in November With 32-bit Float Audio

Sony has introduced the ECM-W5, a wireless microphone system aimed at video creators, with a recommended price of S$550 and availability from mid-November at Sony Store Online and retail outlets. The kit pairs two transmitters with one receiver, and the parts also sell separately: the ECM-W5R receiver at S$260 and the ECM-W5T transmitter at S$170, which allows setups of up to four channels and multi-camera recording. Sony positions it for run-and-gun shooting across a wide range of scenarios.

The system transmits over a line-of-sight distance of up to 500 metres and, Sony says, holds about three times more stable a connection than the earlier ECM-W3 in congested radio-frequency environments. Through Sony's Multi Interface (MI) Shoe, 32-bit float audio travels digitally straight to a compatible camera and records in the same file as the video, which removes a sync step in editing. The wide dynamic range of 32-bit float also makes it harder to clip a sudden loud moment or lose a quiet one.

Recording and backup

The microphones support 96 kHz High-Resolution Audio recording. Each transmitter also carries up to 64 GB of built-in memory for a 32-bit float backup recorded on the transmitter itself, a safety net if the wireless link drops. A 3.5 mm input accepts lavalier and external microphones, including Sony's separately sold ECM-L1, and a supplied USB Type-C adapter connects the system to smartphones and PCs.

Monitoring and streaming

Paired with compatible Sony wireless headphones, the ECM-W5 allows cable-free monitoring. Low-latency transmission is pitched at uses where real-time audio matters, including live streaming, and power with linked power control runs through the MI Shoe on compatible cameras.

Sony has quoted Singapore pricing only and has not announced Malaysian availability or a ringgit price. For creators here, the ECM-W5 sits above Sony's phone-focused ECM-AX10 spatial-audio mic, and if a wired option is enough, our guide to the best lavalier microphones in Malaysia starts from RM26.
