Malaysians heading overseas have a cheaper way to stay connected. CelcomDigi has refreshed its roaming passes, with options now starting from RM10 and no minimum plan commitment on either prepaid or postpaid. The passes cover up to 95 destinations worldwide, and the operator says customers can stay connected from the moment they land, without swapping SIM cards or installing an eSIM profile.
What the refreshed passes cost
The headline is the entry price. CelcomDigi Prepaid customers can now roam from as low as RM10, with fixed high-speed data quotas so the spend is capped and predictable, and the option to top up more data when needed. Postpaid customers get a different deal built around unlimited data: unlimited 5G roaming starts from RM30, which the operator is pitching at travellers who would rather not watch a data meter while navigating, streaming or making video calls abroad.
There are a few extra savings layered on top for heavier users. Customers on the Postpaid 5G 120 plan and above get 50 percent off selected roaming passes. Frequent travellers can also opt into a monthly recurring roaming plan, priced at RM20 a month with a contract or RM40 a month without one, which keeps roaming switched on all year under a single opt-in rather than buying a pass per trip.
How the passes work
All prepaid and postpaid roaming passes include up to 30 minutes of free calls, both back to Malaysia and within the destination country, which is aimed at keeping in touch without a separate call charge. CelcomDigi has also grouped destinations into zones: a Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand (SIT) zone, a newly introduced Asia Zone, and a Worldwide option, so a single pass can cover multiple countries on one trip.
The convenience points are where the operator is drawing the line against buying a local SIM. Passes can be pre-booked up to 14 days before departure through the CelcomDigi app, the connection activates on arrival with no SIM change or eSIM setup, and 5G roaming is available in supported destinations. Customers subscribe through the app under the Roaming section, or by dialling *800# while overseas.
Where it sits
CelcomDigi is Malaysia's largest mobile operator, with more than 20.3 million users on its network, so a change to how it prices roaming reaches a large share of Malaysian travellers. It follows a run of consumer moves from the operator this year, from bundling AppleCare into a CelcomDigi Protect+ plan from RM50 a month to its wider push on 5G as Digital Nasional Berhad secured funding and spectrum. For anyone comparing the cost of staying connected abroad, the RM10 prepaid entry point and the RM30 unlimited postpaid option are the two numbers to weigh against a travel eSIM or a local SIM at your destination.
