Malaysia's move to electric cars is no longer a niche story. In August, a Proton e.MAS was registered on average once every seven minutes, and the model driving most of that traffic is now the brand's cheapest one.

A record month, led by the affordable e.MAS 5
Proton e.MAS sold 6,047 units in August 2026, its strongest month since launch and the first time the national EV brand has passed 6,000 units in a single month. Of that total, 5,999 were domestic registrations, which keeps Proton e.MAS as Malaysia's best-selling EV brand. It reached the mark about 20 months after the e.MAS 7 first went on sale in December 2024.
The figure that matters for buyers is which car did the work. The e.MAS 5, Proton's affordable EV hatchback, accounted for 4,770 units, close to 80 per cent of domestic registrations. The e.MAS 7 added 613 registrations and the e.MAS 7 PHEV another 616, so demand held up across the range even as the entry model pulled ahead.
Where the cars are going
Selangor took 51 per cent of domestic sales, followed by Johor and Penang. Those three states together made up 71 per cent of the month's domestic total, a sign that adoption is still concentrated in the more affluent, better-serviced corridors rather than spread evenly across the country. Year to date, Proton e.MAS has registered 27,402 vehicles domestically and exported 453 more to Nepal, Trinidad and Tobago, Singapore and Mauritius, for a total of 27,855 sales in the first eight months of 2026. The brand had already crossed 30,000 registrations since launch a month earlier.
"Reaching 5,999 registrations in a single month is a tremendous milestone for Proton e.MAS, but above all, it is a reflection of the trust and support Malaysians have placed in our brand," said Zhang Qiang, chief executive of PRO-NET, the company that distributes e.MAS.
Why the numbers keep climbing
Price explains much of it, but the support network is catching up too. Proton e.MAS now runs 60 dealerships, 46 service centres and 10 body and paint centres, up from 36 dealerships and 29 service centres a year earlier. It also lists 103 DC fast chargers at selected dealerships and access to more than 4,700 charging points through its in-car and app-based charging map, including over 1,500 points across more than 600 high-rise residences, which is the part of ownership that usually worries condo dwellers most.
The wider picture is the one worth watching. Our own analysis of eight years of registration data shows Proton growing while several established rivals shrink, and the e.MAS line is a large part of why. A brand adding an affordable EV at the moment charging access improves is a different proposition from the early, expensive EVs that most Malaysians watched from the sidelines.
What it means for buyers
For anyone weighing an EV this year, the takeaway is simple: the cheapest Proton e.MAS is now the one most people are buying, and the network you would lean on after the sale is expanding to match. That combination, not any single record, is what turns a monthly headline into a longer trend.
