What the 2027 awards offer
Now in their fifth year, the awards are run by Creo in partnership with Sony and are built to connect emerging filmmakers with the industry. Entrants submit short films across six categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Immersive, Animation, Student, and Future Format. The headline change this year is a new Immersive category, presented by Meta, for short films made in 3D, 180 degree, or 360 degree video.

Shortlisted filmmakers are flown to Los Angeles for a four day industry program at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, running from 7 to 10 June 2027 and closing with a gala ceremony on 10 June. The sessions cover production, film acquisition, working with press, animation, and soundtracking, led by Sony Pictures executives.
Prizes and what is at stake
Winners in the Fiction, Non-Fiction, Animation, and Student categories receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, a Meta VR device, and a US$5,000 cash prize. The Immersive winner receives a Meta VR device and US$5,000. The Future Format category, which this year asks for vertical 9:16 shorts of two to five minutes, awards US$2,500 and Sony Digital Imaging equipment, plus a place on the Los Angeles workshop.
Why it matters for local creators
Free entry counts for a lot. Most international film competitions charge submission fees that add up quickly, so a no cost route to a shortlist, industry mentoring, and camera gear lowers the barrier for Malaysian and Southeast Asian filmmakers who are still building a name. The new Immersive strand also signals where the organisers think storytelling is heading, giving creators who experiment with 3D and 360 formats a dedicated place to compete.
How to enter
Entries are open now at sonyfuturefilmmakerawards.com. The Fiction, Non-Fiction, Immersive, Animation, and Student winners will be revealed at the Los Angeles ceremony on 10 June 2027, while the Future Format winner is announced in April 2027. The deadline for all entries is 15 December 2026.
For anyone in Malaysia sitting on a finished short or an idea for one, this is a rare chance to put it in front of a global panel without paying to play.
