I feel that I've always had good immunity, as I rarely get sick. When I do, aside from medication, I'd sleep to quickly recover within 3 days.
That is until COVID-19 Coronavirus made its international debut. Ever since then, my immune system have gotten weaker after having exposure to the virus, even though I was already vaccinated. Suddenly, I get flu very often (my record is 3 times in 6 months) and that my recovery time is now nearly 2 weeks.
It's frustrating to sleep with a blocked nose for a week. Even after nasal flushes, my 'clean nose' condition would only last about 3 hours. This led me to realise that the air is dirtier than I thought.
Ever since then, my interest in air purifiers grew. And just so happen, the office has a Dyson Cool Formaldehyde Air Purifier TP09, which just turned 2 yeard old, that I can try out.

- About Dyson Cool Formaldehyde Air Purifier TP09
With cooling/fan capabilities, the Dyson Cool Formaldehyde Air Purifier TP09 clears not just smoke, odour, dust and pollen, but also Formaldehyde — a chemical substance that can harm our health permanently. This air purifier is equipped with a HEPA H13 filter that can capture 99.95% of particles down to the size of 0.1 microns.
The air purifier also uses Air Multiplier technology to circulate air around its space in order to purify every millimeter of the room. Not forgetting to mention, it's also an oscillating fan.
What is Formaldehyde? It's a type of gas that is commonly used in the production of building materials such as particleboard, resin and paint. Prolonged exposure of it through contaminated air, food and drink is linked to cases (of any degree) in poisoning, allergy and asthma.
As Formaldehyde is not visible to the naked eye, it can be difficult to detect and destroy. It's also one of the most common pollutant found indoors. Typical activities like cooking (with open fire) and paints or varniches also have some form of Formaldehyde.
- Why get this?
- We like the Dyson Cool Formaldehyde Air Purifier TP09 for its continuous assessment, ease of use (through the MyDyson mobile app) and supportive cooling capabilities.
- During our tests, it also cleans the air (odour and pollutants) in under 30 minutes. That's quite fast!
- While the air purifier costs about RM3,499 upfront with its filter replacement costing RM299 (change once every 12 months), that sets back to about annual costs of RM648 in 10 years. So while the value is pricey, it's actually not the highest in our database. For us, the air purifier is worth it if you need the fan to quickly clear the air.
While our office generally uses it as a fan in one of the small meeting rooms, the air purifier was quick to clear odours (within 30 minutes) and freshen up stale air. Besides Formaldehyde, the air purifier also monitors and clears the air of other particulate matters such as Volatile organic compounds in cosmetic products, Nitrogen dioxide from nicotine residue (in vapes) and cooking smells.
The air purifier is pricey upfront. But if one can afford it, especially if living in an industrial or high-traffic area, the air purifier offers more than just being a sleek, aesthetic machine in your home. It cleans air fast in medium-sized rooms and that's the best reason to get it.
[This air purifier was tested in a 111 square-feet room with an air quality monitor, a scented candle and perfume.]
- Set up
While I did not have the chance to unbox this unit myself, online reviewers have said that the unboxing and set up experience was an easy 3-step process. I also managed to easily connect the air purifier to the MyDyson app via instructions onscreen. Overall, set up is a very straightforward and beginner-friendly experience.
Of course, the air purifier is still useable without connection to the app; you just would not get in-depth insights into the air quality surrounding the purifier.
- Design
The Formaldehyde Air Purifier TP09 has a bladeless fan look, making it stand out among other conventional air purifiers in the market. Weighing only 4.85kg, the air purifier was also fairly light and easy to carry around. Although the exterior is made with some type of strong plastic material, the finish looked metallic and premium.
At the base of the air purifier, on the front is a simple on/off button, and an LCD screen to check out the air quality monitor, showing a graph for spikes in pollutants. Meanwhile, the back is the HEPA H13 filter encased and can be easily pulled out, drawer-style (some pressure in movement might be needed to take out the filter).
Morover, the top of the air purifier has a magnet insert that lets you put the remote control on top of it.
- Performance
Purification power
Because of its oscillating feature, the fan can project air far across the room to circulate air to be cleaned efficiently, compared to other air purifiers of similar size. If you set it to Auto Mode, the air purifier will actively and continously monitor the air (temperature and humidity included), sets the right fan speed, and clear off pollutants.
In our tests, the air purifier reacts right away upon spraying some perfume and exstinguished smoke from a scented candle. It took just 3 minutes for the air quality index (AQI) reading to go from "Fair" (67 - 100 AQI) to "Very good" (below 34 AQI). As for odours, the smoke was gone within 10 minutes, while the perfume lingered on till almost 30 minutes up.
Fan
While the air purifier was marketed with cooling capability, it's important to know that this shouldn't be a fan replacement. We believe that the fan does help immensely to circulate air so that every inch of the room is purified.
Dyson has never disclosed the true clean air delivery rate (CADR) of this air purifier, but with its fan and the fact that Dyson tested this in their POLAR room sized 81m3 (about 872 square feet), we believe it is rated at least 581 CADR (2/3 of the air purifier's capability).
Smart features
With the mobile app, you can activate the air purifier remotely, change its mode, fan speed and oscillating settings, as well as get easy notifications to when it's time to change the filter or any other parts. You can also schedule when to activate the air purifier. This much of access for any user can come in handy, such as when they are highly allergic and want to come home to clearn air from work.
To note, the air purifier's LCD monitor was certainly quick to show the spike in pollutants and clean the air, upon us spraying perfume and releasing exstinguished smoke from a scented candle. But there was delay input whereby the graph on the mobile app did not reflect right away, instead I had to restart the app to show the changes in spike.
