HONOR Magic5 Pro 5G Review Malaysia

Review: HONOR Magic5 Pro 5G—Truly Magical Cameras

For what it's worth, this is a great budget flagship.

Since their split from Huawei in 2020, Honor has been consistently pushing out great flagships that focus on powerful camera capabilities. And now, that list includes the HONOR Magic5 Pro.

Build & Design

The design language in the Honor Magic5 Pro isn’t that much of a far cry from the HONOR Magic4 Pro. In fact, it’s pretty much mirrored: the large, round “Eye of the Muse” sits right slap on the top half of the back of the phone and isn’t exactly forgettable.

The phone has got a substantial weight, but not too heavy to be unpleasant. In fact, it actually feels pretty nice to hold, as the back cover’s matte finish provides a smooth yet fingerprint-repellent feel.

The front is adorned with a stunning 6.76-inch AMOLED display that curves gracefully at the edges. I’m not the biggest fan of curved screens, and the Honor Magic5 Pro gives me more reason to avoid them: despite the stunning visuals, the curved screen was way too prone to mistouches and distorting the image on the edges.

Display

Speaking of the display, the Magic5 Pro's 6.76-inch AMOLED screen is nothing short of spectacular. The 120Hz refresh rate ensures buttery-smooth animations, making everything from gaming to scrolling through your Instagram feed an absolute delight. The colors are punchy, the blacks are deep, and the viewing angles are just perfect.

The screen is also bright enough to be perfectly visible even under direct sunlight. Coupled with the 2160Hz PWM dimming technology, it apparently also puts less strain on your eyes, though this isn’t an active feature that I could see immediate results for.

Camera

This is where the Honor Magic5 Pro really shines. The phone is equipped with a triple camera system made entirely of 50MP cameras. The 50MP main sensor captures detailed and vibrant photos, the 50MP ultrawide sensor is perfect for those breathtaking landscapes, and the 50MP periscope telephoto sensor, with its 100x zoom, ensures you don't miss out on any details.

The 12MP front camera, on the other hand, ensures your selfie game is always on point.

Last year’s Magic4 Pro had the giant flaw of overheating when out shooting for longer periods of time. I’m happy to report that the Honor Magic 5 Pro did not have this issue, though it did get slightly warm after prolonged usage.

Performance & Battery

Under the hood, the Honor Magic5 Pro is a beast. It has to be, since it's powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, one of the most potent chips in the market typically found on flagships of its calibre.

As expected, the Magic5 Pro was able to hand pretty much everything I threw at it on the daily. From PUBG to running Lightroom Mobile, the Magic5 Pro can handle it all. I’ve yet to experience any significant lags or stutters while using the phone.

The Honor Magic5 Pro has a large battery of 5100mAh. However, Honor has scaled down on its charging speed, offering only 50W wireless fast charging, as opposed to last year’s 100W charging. Then again, last year’s Magic4 Pro had the dangerous habit of overheating while charging, so it makes sense that Honor is backing down a little on this aspect.

The HONOR Magic5 Pro isn’t exactly the most powerful phone on the market, but it’s certainly in the ranks, considering both price and performance. If you’re looking for an all-rounder smartphone with an emphasis on camera technology, then the HONOR Magic5 Pro is just for you.
