We got a chance to get a first-hand experience with the newest foldable phone, so here are our first impressions of it!

Design and Display

First off, the Galaxy Z Flip5 is a marvel of engineering, boasting a 3.4" cover screen with a flex window. The device folds down to a compact 15.1" thanks to its Flex Hinge, making it a perfect fit for any pocket or purse. The foldable design is seamless, with an almost unnoticeable crease and no discernible gap when folded.

The cover screen is not just for show; it's a fully functional interface that allows users to reply to messages directly. It also hosts a variety of widgets, a pull-down notification bar, and even the Samsung Wallet, which can function as a digital car key for BMW vehicles. Users can pinch the screen to view multiple widgets at once, enhancing the device's usability. The device also introduces the new palm mute mode, a handy feature for quickly silencing incoming calls and notifications. Additionally, the Z Flip5 features a new clock face and customizable cover widgets, allowing users to personalize their devices to their liking.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 comes in four colours: graphite, lavender, cream, and a new colour, mint. Samsung also offers a range of accessories for separate purchase, including a clear gadget case, an eco-leather case, a silicon case, and the new Flipsuit Case, which is NFC compatible. The cover screen syncs with the case, allowing the Cover Screen to mirror the colour of the back case!

Performance & Battery

Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Flip5 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, similar to the hardware found in the S23. However, the Z Flip5 features much smaller camera sensors, a necessary compromise for its compact design. Just like on the Galaxy Z Flip4, Flex Mode is as handy as ever!

The device also supports local app collaborations. For instance, users can use the Family Mart app in Flex Mode, demonstrating the device's versatility and adaptability to various applications.

On the battery front, we haven't had the chance to really test out the battery life yet, but considering the upgrade in the processor, which performed pretty well on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, we do expect the Z Flip5 to have better power efficiency and can comfortably last a day under normal usage.

Camera

The Z Flip5 is equipped with a 12MP ultrawide, a 12MP wide camera with OIS on the back, and a 10MP front camera. The device also features the Selfie Flexcam, allowing users to take high-quality selfies with ease using the rear cameras.

With the larger Cover Screen, both Cover Screen selfies and photo previewing are much easier and more comfortable to use. So far, the pictures we got with the Galaxy Z Flip5 were pretty great, with well-balanced colours and lighting.
