10,000 More EV Charging Points To Be Installed in Malaysia By 2025

The Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Ministry is looking to add more benefits for electric vehicle owners

Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC) Minister recently announced that the ministry is looking to install 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points by 2025 through the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint.

On 14 February 2023, at Malaysia's EV Conference 2023, Nik Nazmi said to the press that "the ministry is committed to increasing electricity generation from renewable energy sources through the Electricity Supply Generation Development Plan 2021-2039 while strengthening the grid and developing the EV ecosystem."

He added that making EVs affordable and appealing to everyone in society was a major challenge, and that market forces alone might not be enough to overcome it. So, incentives for buyers and manufacturers are needed to hasten the shift to EVs for Malaysians.

Currently, Malaysia has more than 10,000 registered EVs and 900 public charging points installed. We can expect to see more EV incentives in the future as Malaysia is working towards the development of reliable transportation powered by renewable energy.
