First Impression: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 – A Multitasker's Best Friend

Samsung's fourth generation foldable is coming in hot!

At this point, you’ve probably heard about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4, which just launched alongside the Galaxy Z Flip4 earlier this month.

We recently got our hands on one of the Galaxy Z Fold4, and here’s our first impression of the folded phone.

Specs At A Glance:

  • Processor: Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, 4㎚ Octa-Core Processor
  • Display: 7.6” HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X (Main Screen), 6.2-inch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X (Cover Screen)
  • Memory: 12GB RAM + 256GB/512GB/1TB ROM
  • Rear Camera: Triple camera, 12MP Ultra Wide + 50MP Wide Angle with OIS + 10MP Telephoto
  • Front Camera: 10MP Selfie Camera (Cover), 4MP (Under-display camera)
  • Battery: 4,400mAh dual battery
  • Operating System: Android 12L, One UI 4.1.1

What’s In The Box?

  • Galaxy Z Fold4
  • Type-C to Type-C charger cable

Display – It’s bigger on the inside!

At first glance, the Galaxy Z Fold4 looks exactly like the Fold3, with a slightly wider cover screen and slightly thinner hinges.

We got the Grey Green colourway, which is a sleek, metallic, dark-but-not-quite-black matte housing that’s cool to the touch and retains no fingerprints. The cover screen is 6.2”, a little slimmer and taller than typical smartphones, which feel great to hold in hand.

The thickness and weight will take some getting used to, as it’s a whopping 15.8mm thick and 263g in weight. For comparison, the Galaxy S22 is only 168g, making the Fold4 almost twice the weight of a non-foldable phone.

In exchange for the slight wrist strain, the Fold4 unfolds into a massive 7.6” HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X with a 120Hz refresh rate. It’s a two-handed effort to open up the phone, but the hinges are quite smooth and definitely feel sturdy.

According to Samsung, this generation of foldables is the most durable yet, with Armor Aluminum frames along with exclusive Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on both the cover and main screens, and fortified with an optimized layer structure to minimize damage from external shock.

Camera – Flagship Cameras & FlexCam

On the outside, the Fold4’s camera isn’t all that different from the previous generation. The rear camera module is slightly raised, but the Fold4 is still able to lay flat on the table without much of a wobble.

On the inside, though, Samsung has done some major upgrades on the camera software. It sports a 50MP main camera, with a 10MP telephoto lens and a 12MP ultrawide lens, giving you the same flagship camera specs that make Samsung’s famed Nightography possible on the Fold4 too.

A few quick snaps with the phone show nice and vivid colours, balanced light, and sharp, clear photos.

Other Fun Stuff – Optimized Split Screens, Taskbar, and Gaming Performance

If you’ve ever asked for a smartphone that acts more like a laptop, then Santa-sung has just made Christmas come early for you.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 is designed specifically for multitasking and productivity. One of the first things we tried out as soon as we got the phone was the Multi-Active Window feature, which allows you to open up to three windows on the main screen. I have to say, my brain couldn’t really keep up with three screens, but the Fold4 certainly did – which was very impressive.

The Taskbar is like its namesake on a Windows computer – your favourite and recent apps will appear there automatically, which is very useful if you want to use the split-screen feature while in the middle of something else.

Gaming on the Galaxy Z Fold4 is an interesting experience. The main screen feels more like a tablet than a smartphone, which looks great but doesn’t make for a very comfortable gaming experience as most mobile games are designed for regular candybar phones. The graphics and colours are awesome, and the processor can keep up with demanding graphics, but my small hands found it hard to hold the large screen up while reaching for the controls with my thumbs.

I also tried gaming on the cover screen, which was objectively worse than playing on the main screen. When folded, the cover screen is a little too narrow and a little too thick for comfortable grip and control. That said, I do believe that this is a matter of getting used to the size rather than a problem with the phone itself, as its performance was pretty decent.

With how many talking points we’ve found after just a few days with the phone, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 will be an interesting phone to review. As a pretty decent workstation for the productive, designed more for work than entertainment, the Fold4 has also generated a lot of hype amongst the public since its announcement — here's what they had to say during our Galaxy Unpacked Watch Party.

If you're as excited for the Fold4 as they are, stay tuned for our full review!
