Today’s Google Doodle Honours Malaysian Zoologist Dr Lim Boo Liat

In memory of one of Malaysia’s finest.

If you’re on the Internet today (of course you are, how can you not be if you’re here), head over to Google and check out today’s Google Doodle.

Today’s Doodle features a white-haired, bespectacled scientist followed by a myriad of animals reading books about themselves. What’s so special about this, you ask?

The scientist depicted is none other than Malaysia’s own Dr Lim Boo Liat, an important award-winning zoologist who passed away two years ago to date.

Dr Lim Boo Liat received his PhD in Zoology from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1977 and was subsequently hired by the World Health Organisation to help manage the Vector Biology Control Research Unit. After his retirement, Dr Lim became an honorary consultant on zoology for the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia.

Dr Lim has also authored over 300 scientific papers and books on animals in Malaysia.

Throughout his career, he has received many local and international awards in recognition for his pioneering work that revealed the biological diversity of Malaysia. Most notably, he was the first Southeast Asian to receive an honorary membership in the American Society of Mammologists.

As one of the most important figures in Malaysian science, no wonder Dr Lim got his own Google Doodle. If you’ve got the time, do look up the works and legacies of this truly remarkable man.
