The New 2022 Razer Blade Laptop Lineup

Same same but different, so how to choose?

Another year, another new lineup of Razer Blade laptops. For 2022, Razer is releasing three different variants: the Razer Blade 14, Razer Blade 15, and Razer Blade 17. As always, Razer has an offering for everyone, and this release is no different. Differing mostly in size and power, the new Razer Blade lineup comes to the table with amazing specs and performance.

Which brings the question: which laptop is the most suitable one for you?

Razer Blade 14

The Razer Blade 14 may be the smallest of the bunch, but that doesn’t make it weaker than its bigger brothers.

Packing a Ryzen 9 6900HX with an NVIDIA 3070TI or 3080TI, this is one serious powerhouse of a machine packed in a small body. Whether it’s work or gaming, the Razer Blade 14 can handle it all and more. The 14-inch screen is a QHD panel that has a high refresh rate of 165hz as well as a 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut.

So, with its compact size, powerful specs, and lightweight, who exactly is this laptop for? We’d probably say people who travel a lot, who spend more time on the road than they do at home.

After all, it's got everything someone would need when they’re on the go, be it the sub-2kg weight that makes it easy to lug around in your backpack or the powerful specs that can let you game or work. Plus, we appreciate the lack of bloatware included in the laptop, making everything run very smooth throughout. There’s also the surprising variety of ports, which saves you from needing to carry around a dock.

This doesn’t mean we didn’t have anything to complain about though.

Although we found the display just a tad smaller than we’d like, we understand that this is entirely a personal preference. The Razer Blade 14 is marketed toward the ultrabook market, so the smaller screen is completely on-brand.

What’s more unforgivable is the lacklustre battery life, a full charge of which lasts less than 8 hours. So if you’re planning on going out for a full day without bringing the charger, you might want to reconsider. Still, this is offset by the compact power brick charger which can easily fit in your laptop bag.

Razer Blade 15

This is the “middle child” of the Razer Blade lineup. We actually did a full review of the Razer Blade 15 previously, which you can check out here:

For a quick recap, the Razer Blade 15 has a 15-inch QHD resolution screen running at 240hz, but there’s also a UHD resolution option that runs at 144hz. The laptop is powered by a Core i7 12800H, and either an RTX3070Ti or RTX3080Ti. All of this means that whatever variant of the Razer Blade 15 you’re getting, you’re going to have a great time with gaming and content creation.

We tested the laptop with a number of games, like Control, Metro Exodus, and Forza 5, and we found great results from all of them. They performed excellently, even with their high spec requirements. Even with Control, we found that we were getting upwards of 50fps running on the highest setting with ray-tracing on.

So, who exactly is this laptop for?

The answer is gamers, content creators, or gaming content creators. Although it’s slightly bigger than the Razer Blade 14, it wasn’t that much of a noticeable difference. Plus, we found the bigger screen to be much more comfortable to use.

Personally, we’d recommend getting the QHD RTX3070Ti variant if you’re looking to just use it for gaming but opt for the UHD RTX3080Ti model if you’re a content creator looking for your next editing machine.

We felt the keyboard, although great in spacing and size, lacked travel distance between the keys, making it feel a bit subpar.

The Razer Blade 15 is perfect for people who need to be on the go every now and then, but it works perfectly for home settings too.

Razer Blade 17

Finally, we have the eldest sibling of the Razer Blades, the Razer Blade 17. Honestly, there isn’t much to say about this particular laptop, as it shares the same spec sheet as the Razer Blade 15.

From the Core i7 processor to the 240hz QHD display, it's everything in the Razer Blade 15 is, just packed in a larger body. And really, that’s all it needs to be. The Razer Blade 17 will probably be the most niche of the three, as even though it’s technically a laptop, we find the term ‘desktop replacement’ to be more apt.

With the 17-inch screen, there’s so much space for either your productivity tasks or gaming, it really just feels like a portable desktop. And with its 2.75kg weight, it might as well be one.

There’s also an ample number of ports on the laptop, from the video out ports to USBs, and even an SD card reader, something a lot of people will thank Razer for preserving.

The Razer Blade 17 also comes with more spec options, so you can choose an FHD panel instead and a lower-end but less power-consuming graphic card like the RTX3060. Again, with all these customization options, it’s becoming more and more like a desktop than a laptop.

Again, we had trouble finding things to complain about with this laptop. We thought that the larger chassis might be a disadvantage, but considering how it’s meant to be more of a desktop replacement rather than a lightweight ultrabook, it actually serves its purpose rather well.

The larger casing means that there’s better heat dissipation throughout the laptop, meaning cooler thermals overall.

Battery life, much like the other two models, is a bit disappointing, but this point is rather moot when we consider that the Razer Blade 17 will most likely spend most of its days attached to the charger.

Even the speakers sound better, mostly due to the more open space that they’re now allowed to breathe.

Overall, the Razer Blade 17 isn’t the best gaming laptop in terms of its portability, but it makes up for it in a lot of ways that just might make it worth it for certain users. Users who want a desktop experience but still need to transport it around once or twice a month would love it.
