12 Best Face Moisturizers in Malaysia 2024 - For All Skin Types

Your face deserves to be slathered on with some soothing goodness.

Being one of the mandatory steps in any skincare routine, facial moisturizers are considered the staples to achieve plumped and healthy skin. Sadly, choosing the right face moisturizer for our skin can be more challenging than choosing the right watermelon for our mums. This is because as much as its name has suggested, being merely moisturizing is not what a moisturizer does.

A moisturizer also works to tackle skin concerns such as skin ageing, skin dullness, skin sensitivity and even skin blemishes. It can appear in the form of a gel, a cream or a hybrid of the two!

With that being said, there are simply too many types of face moisturizers on the market to make one easily lose their way through. As such, in this article, we have come up with a list of the best face moisturizers - recommendations at different price points, targeting different skin types and skin problems.

Which Moisturiser Should You Choose?

- Cream moisturizers:

Cream moisturizers are essentially thick, emollient-rich formulations that provide deep hydration and are best for those with dry or dehydrated skin. They tend to have a slower drying time for maximum moisture absorption which can aid in reducing water loss.

- Gel moisturizers:

Gel moisturizers are lightweight and water-based formulation that makes them suitable for those with oily to combination skin due to their smaller molecular size to better help penetrate the skin. They provide hydration without leaving a greasy or heavy feeling on the skin and are more refreshing to apply.

- Oil-based moisturizers:

Oil-based moisturizers are suitable for those with skin on the dryer side as they provide a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss. They are often rich in essential oils and can be used to nourish and hydrate skin overnight. It isn’t so advisable to use it during the day, however.

- Barrier repair moisturizers:

Barrier repair moisturizers are designed to restore the skin's natural barrier function, which is often compromised in those with dry, damaged or sensitive skin. This can lead to your skin having heightened sensitivity as well as painful flare-ups. Moisturisers focused on skin barrier repair often contain ingredients such as ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids, which help to repair and strengthen the skin barrier.

How We Test Moisturisers In Malaysia

Whether you’re in Malaysia or anywhere else in the world, there is an abundance of moisturiser options available for you to choose from—you’ll be spoiled silly! In fact, moisturizers are one of the easiest skincare products you can find on the market. Moisturisers are versatile and when you’re in a pinch, using a body lotion can get the job done as well.

In our hot and sunny climate, we’re on a neverending seesaw tipping back and forth with most of our demographic having dry and sensitive skin that gets dehydrated by our weather or the other side with super oily skin due to excessive sebum production. With that, finding a moisturiser suitable for all skin types is important.

At ProductNation, we have the privilege of personally trying numerous sunscreens to provide an honest and unbiased review of our experience. It’s important to note that skincare in general will react differently for everyone. Some may have more sensitive skin whereas others may have a more resilient skin barrier.

We applied it on our own skin while sharing it amongst our team for a more diverse review. The requirement for the review was to use it during our daytime and nighttime skincare routine and the review period was for one month.

My skin type: Combination (oilier in the day, dryer in the night), super sensitive (redness, easily irritated and inflamed), acne-prone (with slight active acne).

With time, they will keep your skin healthy, hydrated and fresh. With its fast-absorbent and man-made chemical-free formula, this moisturiser offers a revitalised afterlook.

"In Our Experience" - Live ProductNation Review

If I was in a burning room with every moisturizer ever made and could only save one, it would be this moisturiser. Is that a stretch? Maybe, but this is a personal holy grail for many reasons.

As someone who has sensitive skin that’s also acne-prone, my skin is susceptible to damage through inflammation and scarring. With that being said, being cautious about the ingredients I apply to my skin as well as being observant of how it reacts is important as well. Simply putting on anything on my skin isn’t a walk-in-the-park experience.

However, the Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream is a formula designed to repair and provide hydration for skin like mine. The main character of this blockbuster formula is ceramide but not the atypical way you’d find them finely blended. Instead, Illiyoon utilises Ceramide Skin Complex™ which is a patented ingredient that is the world’s first ceramide-encapsulated technology.

This can be seen when you first push the moisturiser out and the cream appears grainy. It’s a strange texture for first-time users but once you glide the cream across your face, you’ll see it blend into an even consistency.

The cream is soothing and hydrating with slight occlusivity just enough to help it seal in everything without feeling too heavy and confining. During the review, we tested it during the day as well as at night and it wore comfortably in both situations.

Moreover, when it comes to products that we rave about as the overall best we aren’t just looking at the formula. We take into account all aspects from how it's packaged, the performance as well as the value of the plain jane.

There’s no doubt that on top of an S-tier formula, the Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream is one of the best when it comes to value at the affordable price of RM45, you’re getting back 200ml worth of product when regular moisturisers come in the standard 100ml or less!

To add, with this cream, a little goes a long way which puts it at an estimated 2 months of usage if you were to use it twice a day! It’s safe to say that when it comes to the best of the best, look no further than Illiyoon.

add_circle Eczema-friendly
add_circle Can be applied to the face and body

Overview:

If your skin barrier is not in good condition, your skin will end up dry and feel patchy which is not a very ideal state that one would wish for. This moisturising cream from CeraVe puts 3 essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid to work together to restore your skin’s protective barrier.

With the MVE Delivery Technology, this fast-absorbing moisturising cream will steadily release moisturising ingredients so that your skin stays moist throughout the day and night.

"In Our Experience" - Live ProductNation Review

When it comes to dry skin, it seems like a simple and straightforward task when searching for a moisturiser. Your skin is dry so all it needs is just hydration and you’re good to go, right? Well, we wish it was that easy!

Dry skin is more prone to skin barrier damage compared to those with oilier skin so a moisturiser like the Cerave Moisturising Cream is. Ingredients-wise, this cream is a banger. Formulated with triglyceride that helps to bind skin proteins together, the presence of glycerine and 3 types of ceramides are included as well.

Ceramides in general are amazing as they provide essential nutrients for skin repair and rejuvenation. Hence, this cream for those with dry skin like mine makes this a blessing in a plastic tube. It’s soothing and hydrating against the skin, however, it may come across as being a bit too heavy due to its occlusivity.

Additionally, the formulation is on the thicker side; think aqueous creams you’d get from the doctor after a burn or for eczema. Due to its thicker consistency, it’s also harder to blend and may need to take a bit of rubbing for it to eventually disperse on the skin.

The final verdict? Use this moisturizer lightly during the day and thicker at night. Be gentle when blending to avoid using unnecessary tugging of the skin due to its thick texture.

Details:

  • Key Ingredients: Ceramides, Glycerine, Hyaluronic Acid
  • Size: 50ml
  • Suitable for: dry to very dry skin
  • Scent: Fragrance-free

Who is this for?

For those with skin sensitive to fragrance or extremely dry skin, this product will help your skin eventually rebuild its barrier while keeping it moist with its fragrance-free formula. If you are the kind of person to apply your skincare once a day, the long-lasting effect of this moisturiser will come in handy for you.

Best moisturizer for sensitive skin
Etude House
Check Etude House Soon Jung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream price below:
add_circle 93% natural ingredients and free from toxic ingredients
add_circle Suitable for extremely sensitive skin
add_circle Reduce skin irritation

Overview:

With panthenol and madecassoside, this intensive cream is made to calm irritated skin down. It is also conditioned to be a little acidic to bring the skin’s pH level to the ideal level (5.5)  since dry and damaged skin tends to be at a higher alkaline level (7.5 and above).

Proven to be gentle on the skin and dermatologically tested, the Etude House Soon Jung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream will instantly relieve and hydrate sensitive and dry skin while also fixing the skin barrier to lessen further dryness.

"In Our Experience" - Live ProductNation Review

The first time I came across the Etude House Soon Jung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream, it was known as one of South Koreans’ best-kept secrets. Why is this important to note? Because if something is being gatekeep-ed, then it’s for good reasons and when it comes to beauty, Koreans just KNOW what’s good.

With that, after trying out this cream it’s understandable when we say if soothing hydration was a bottle, it would be the Etude House Soon Jung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream. Seems like a stretch but this is the everyday cream you need that is lightweight, calming and comfortable to wear from the AM to the PM.

For someone with sensitive skin that has constant random flares, I reach for this calm and soothing moisturiser for when I need a sense of relief. The formulation is top-notch consisting of panthenol, madecassoside and glycerine that are known for being anti-inflammatory as well as skin repairing.

In fact, many assume our skin flares because “it just happens” but in actuality, the skin may react negatively could be due to a damaged skin barrier. Our skin goes through A LOT so once the skin barrier is broken, it becomes susceptible to irritation and inflammation.

Thus, this intensely hydrating moisturiser aids in skin barrier repair by replenishing and increasing the skin’s water levels. With prolonged usage, the skin barrier will be stronger and less sensitive.

Details:

  • Ingredients: Glycerin, Sunflower Seed Oil, Shea Butter, Panthenol, Madecassoside
  • Size: 60ml
  • Suitable for: acne-prone skin, all types of skin

Who is this for?

If irritation and dehydration are your skin’s best friends, this cream will break that friendship and bring your skin barrier back to its best state. In fact, this cream is highly recommended for irritated, sensitive, and weak skin types that are fragile to foreign substances and surroundings. The well-formulated cream will help soothe the skin to improve its overall condition.

add_circle Can be used as a primer, moisturiser, beauty mask or after-shave cream
add_circle Full of nutrients and natural ingredients
add_circle Suitable for sensitive skin

Overview:

This product from Embryolisse is a moisturising lotion with multiple uses such as primer, moisturiser, after-shave cream, and beauty mask—even MUAs SWEAR by it for skin prep! With a focus on supplementing the skin with nutrients and hydration, the essential fatty acids and vitamins blend together to make your skin glow.

As a primer, this concentrated lotion will leave a satin-like finish on your face regardless of skin type and condition. Due to its moisturising and hydrating properties, your complexion will stay silky smooth and nourished even with full-face makeup.

"In Our Experience" - Live ProductNation Review

Have you ever wondered how celebrities on the red carpet seem to have the most gorgeous complexion and wonder what’s the secret? Well, ProductNation is giving the insider scoop on the real key all these MUAs use! What they’ll never tell you is a must-have product in their makeup kits is none other than the Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré.

This cream is not only a holy grail amongst the pros but it’s also incredibly easy to access as you can find it in most drugstores in Malaysia. The texture at first is an essence-like cream that blends into a smooth balmy lotion, a delicate glowy, smooth sheen left behind.

The balm-like finish creates a smooth and even canvas for makeup users to start the base of their masterpiece with. It fills the crook and crannies of our skin for an almost flawless application. Sounds like a dream but is there a downside to this cult product?

Unfortunately, similar to most European beauty products, the Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré is no exception to being high in fragrance. It has a strong floral scent that lingers for a while but will eventually go away. Hence, apply with caution if you have sensitive skin that is exceptionally prone to parfums.

Putting the fragrance aside, the formula is a gorgeous blend of fatty acids and vitamins that creates this multi-tasking, do-it-all cream. Additionally, it comes in a metal tube that makes it easy to squeeze every last drop of this nourishing and hydrating goodness.

Details:

  • Key ingredients: Emollient oil and combinations of natural ingredients: shea butter, beeswax, aloe vera and soy proteins.
  • Size: 75ml
  • Suitable for: all skin types
  • Scent: Flowery

Who is this for?

Many makeup artists opt for this product as their primer to prep their clients’ faces since it has a long-lasting effect to keep the makeup in place while also hydrating their skin. If you wear makeup on a daily or regular basis, this moisturising cream will step up your game as a great solution to dry and flaky skin.

La Roche-Posay

add_circle Restores healthy-looking skin
add_circle Suitable for sensitive skin
add_circle Lightweight
remove_circle Quite expensive for the size
remove_circle Can pill into balls when layered with other products

Overview:

Within one hour of application, this moisturiser will be working on your skin’s protective barrier and hydrate your skin for up to 48 hours. Upon applying this La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Moisturiser, your skin will feel at ease and comfortable with the lightweight cream texture.

The moisturising and hydrating ingredients in this product also make it absorb well into the skin which soothes and supports your skin barrier. Consistent usage of this moisturiser will bring visible outcomes in terms of hydrated, healthy-looking skin and faded skin discolourations.

"In Our Experience" - Live ProductNation Review

La Roche-Posay is understandably a titan in the world of skincare. In simpler terms, they know what they’re doing. Thus, with the Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer hits the target bullseye.

This high-performing formula includes 3 types of ceramides, glycerine and niacinamide which have hydrating, brightening and antioxidant properties your skin will adore. Additionally, the inclusion of La Roche-Posay’s Prebiotic Thermal Water is infused with this blend to deliver vitamins, minerals and a high concentration of selenium known to help soothe the skin.

Despite this formula aiming to repair, nourish and calm the skin, be cautious if you have open wounds. This is because I have minor cuts due to eczema and they stung my skin quite badly. With that, if you’ve been picking on your skin or just did a round of dermaplaning, you might not want to reach for this cream.

Its wet texture is nice to apply against your skin and provides slight occlusivity that helps seal in the hydrating goodness of this cream. To add, the price you pay for the amount you get is definitely worth it.

A little goes a long way so this bad boy will probably last you a good month and a half in the case of using it twice a day. Keep in mind, the cream is a bit too dewy during the initial application and might move your makeup if you apply it immediately after. Our suggestion is to give the moisturizer time to be absorbed into the skin.

Details:

  • Key ingredients: ceramides, niacinamide, glycerine
  • Size: 75ml
  • Suitable for: sensitive skin and all skin types
  • Scent: Fragrance-free

Who is this for?

If you are looking for an oil-free moisturiser, this product is for you. It stays for a long time on your skin while also protecting it from being dehydrated. Reinvigorating the skin barrier will be done with just an easy application of this cream, thanks to its soothing and vitamin-ised formula.

Best night moisturizer
Kiehl’s
Check Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream price below:

add_circle Can last up to 24 hours
add_circle Pleasant natural smell
remove_circle Can be oily and greasy for some
remove_circle Does not do much other than moisturise
remove_circle Quite expensive for the size

Overview:

This Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream has been tested to make your skin smoother, softer and healthier-looking by supporting and nourishing your skin’s moisture barrier. Its lightweight texture can get through your skin and balance its moisture.

As a night moisturiser, this cream will feel light on your face with its non-sticky texture and it will stay throughout the night because of its long-lasting effect. The nice natural scent from the product will also help you feel comfortable and settle in for bed.

"In Our Experience" - Live ProductNation Review

When you ask us, what comes to mind when we think of moisturizers that are known to be absolute classics? Truthfully, the first product we think of is the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream—there’s a reason why it’s the brand’s best-selling product!

The original Ultra Facial Cream (we say original to distinguish it from its oil-free variant) is the product you ask for when all you want is a formula that works, is reliable and has no extra frills. It provides ample hydration and moisture while the formula is slightly occlusive to help keep the good stuff in.

The formula as well is simply amazing with its star ingredients: glacial glycoprotein, olive-derived squalane and rice bran oil; all these ingredients are known for their hydrating ingredients that help to support skin barrier repair while evening out the complexion’s texture.

This seems like an overall okay moisturiser that anyone can use which, truth be told, is factually correct—yes, even for those with sensitive skin. However, there’s a bit of a bend to the truth for that. Those with dry skin will flourish with this moisturizer but those with combination to oily skin might not have the same effect.

Due to its oily/emollient-based nature, it's clear-cut that you will have a “greasy” complexion that will take time to absorb. However, during the time it takes to do exactly that, those with oily skin may overproduce sebum which, in turn, will make them look even oilier.

With that, it isn’t advisable for those with oily to combination skin to use this cream in the day and would better suit during night time.

Details:

  • Key Ingredients: Squalane, Glycerin, Glacial Glycoprotein
  • Sizes: 50ml
  • Suitable for: all skin types
  • Scent: Fragrance-free

Who is this for?

For those looking for a night cream that is lightweight and leaves no white cast, this product is what you need. Since it easily absorbs into the skin, you do not need to worry about getting your pillowcase dirty or having to wait until it dries before you go to bed.

Best gel moisturizer
innisfree
Check innisfree Jeju Cherry Blossom Jelly Cream price below:
add_circle Reduces redness on acne and skin
add_circle Makes skin soft, moist and bouncy
add_circle Great texture and isn’t sticky despite being a gel moisturiser
remove_circle Strong smell/fragrance
remove_circle Fades quickly, dehydrating skin

Overview:

This Jeju Cherry Blossom Jelly Cream from innisfree features a moist and dewy texture that will boost your skin condition for the better. With naturally-derived betaine, the cream will prevent dehydration and leave you with well-moisturised and bright skin.

Despite its jelly texture, it does not leave a greasy finish or sticky residue on your skin, meaning all of its hydrating goodness seeps right into your skin.

"In Our Experience" - Live ProductNation Review

We’ve all been through the glass skin craze, attempting all sorts of techniques and methods but what if we said it’s much easier to achieve it with this cream? The innisfree Jeju Cherry Blossom Jelly Cream went viral for being the secret key to grasping glass skin naturally.

Despite it being called a “cream”, it is more similar to a gel with a wet-cream consistency. It’s lightweight and airy while providing an almost instant absorption rate, leaving behind a glossy glass-like shine that it is so well-known for.

This might sound like a dream but makeup wearers beware that this might not be for you. Due to its iconic wet-gloss appearance, it takes a hot minute for it to fully absorb that by then you won’t exactly have that glass-skin look anymore. Most will pile up the moisturiser for that all-natural bare-faced look so it would really defeat the purpose if you will be applying makeup on top of it.

Moreover, the formula is stunning with hydrating, brightening and calming properties such as sakura (cherry blossom) extracts, glycerine and niacinamide. However, the downside is that it also includes fragrances that may trigger those with sensitive skin.

But to put that aside, the experience of applying the moisturiser is cooling and calming with a gorgeous glow that will have you obsessed. It’s understandable why this cream was hyped up online but it’s also good to note that the gloss doesn’t last as long as you’d expect it would.

Details:

  • Key ingredients: Jeju Cherry Blossom leaf extract, natural betaine, niacinamide, propanediol
  • Size: 50ml
  • Scent: Cherry blossom

Who is this for?

Firming, lifting, absorbent, cooling. If these are the things you wish your moisturiser could do, then this innisfree Jeju Cherry Blossom Jelly Cream is exactly all you need—it has those effects and it is gentle on the skin.

"In Our Experience" - Live ProductNation Review

Oftentimes, we get asked what intrigues us to try something new without any prior knowledge of its performance and effectiveness. There are a plethora of reasons from being intrigued to simple curiosity. With the Daughters of Malaya Summertime Ceramide Moisturizer, it was the ingredient list.

Usually, we see ingredient lists with a few goodies and call it a day, as the rest of the list is emollients and thickening agents which are detrimental to the formula. But when you have a stunning lineup of ingredients such as niacinamide, squalane, alpha arbutin, panthenol and 3 types of ceramides!

It’s hard to fathom getting a jam-packed high-performing formula considering how affordable it is. Not to mention, it is made locally!

The translucent cream is lightweight and airy, while blending is a dream. It spreads well and absorbs into the skin nicely without leaving a tacky/sticky residue but instead a glowy sheen.

This non-fragrant formula is hydrating and soothing against the skin and sits comfortably before being absorbed. When used consistently, it will assist in skin barrier repair while a noticeable brightening effect can be seen within 6 to 8 weeks after usage.

FAQ

- What is a moisturiser used for?

With today's air quality and the many things we do that may damage our skin such as standing out in the sun too long without sun protection, you're technically speeding your skin's ageing process. As the skin lacks moisture, the more apparent fine lines and wrinkles will be, just like how clothes wrinkle easily when dry but not wet.

By using moisturisers, you incorporate a good amount of moisture that your skin may be lacking due to your surroundings. So, should you use a moisturiser every day? Yes, it's very important to do so if you want to protect your skin. Might we add that many brands incorporate several skin-friendly ingredients into moisturisers such as aloe vera due to its healing and cooling properties on the skin!

Here are many more benefits of using moisturisers everyday:

  • Fine lines look less obvious
  • A healthy and glowing complexion
  • Plumper, younger-looking skin
  • Prevent the feeling of tightness (or any discomfort from dry skin)
  • Makeup applies flawlessly
  • Maintain the condition of your skin (such as preventing bad breakouts)

- How to use moisturisers?

As stated, moisturisers might seem simple enough. However, unbeknownst to us, it’s equally as simple to apply them wrong, ultimately rendering them ineffective.

Hence, there’s no harm in learning how to apply moisturisers better; and this goes for those of us who are already applying them correctly as well. In fact, it’s surprising how a few small tweaks are all it takes to acquire bigger results. Check out these 8 tips/hacks to get the most out of your moisturising routine:

  • Use it at the right time

You’re gonna want to lock your moisturiser in as best as possible and the easiest way to do this is to apply your moisturiser when your skin is still moist. This is best achieved after showering or washing your face when your skin is freshly moist after drying with a towel.

  • Apply it on your neck too

Moisturising is helpful to avoid premature ageing. Hence, don’t just stop at your face when applying facial moisturisers, extend it past your jawline to your neck too! However, bear in mind that while facial moisturisers can target wrinkles and dark spots in ways that body lotion can’t, it is alright to use facial moisturisers on your body but never in reverse as body lotions can irritate the face and clog pores.

  • Try one with SPF

We can never emphasise sun care enough. If you find yourself constantly in a rush in the mornings, opt for a moisturiser with broad spectrum SPF. This will help to prevent signs of premature ageing such as dark spots and wrinkles - providing you with not just hydration, but protection too.

  • Mix facial oil with your moisturiser

In a hot and humid country like Malaysia, it’s easy for the environment to cause our skin to be dull and dry. Combat this by mixing facial oil with your moisturiser for a hydration boost. Trust us, your skin will thank you for it.

  • Mix an illuminator into your moisturiser

Breathe life into your skin by mixing a drop of illuminator into your moisturiser - a little goes a long way. The results? A nice glow and brighter complexion!

  • Apply in upward strokes

As you age, you’ll find that your skin starts to sag and get dragged downwards in ways that are not very appealing. If this is the case, apply your moisturiser in upward strokes. While it might not reverse the effects of ageing, the technique increases circulation and helps your skin to absorb more product.

  • Layer it correctly

One of the easiest ways to ensure that you are getting the most out of your skincare routine is by making sure that you are layering your products correctly. With the exception of sunscreen which should always be applied last, start with products that have thinner consistency before moving to thicker ones.

  • Use a hydrating spray

Up your hydration by using a facial mist! These are extremely easy to take on-the-go with you. Apart from adding to your skin’s hydration, a quick spritz also goes miles to re-set your makeup - keeping you looking fresh all day.
