Filling up at a PETRONAS station could soon mean talking to your phone instead of tapping it. Setel, the homegrown mobility app run by PETRONAS, has started rolling out Setel Voice Fuelling, a feature that lets you start a fuel pump by speaking your pump number out loud. It is in beta for now, and Setel says it is the first voice controlled fuelling experience in Malaysia to work across four languages.
The feature builds on Setel's existing One-tap Fuelling, which already lets drivers pay at the pump from the app. Voice Fuelling adds an AI layer on top: once it is switched on, you say your pump number and Setel processes the payment using the method and fuelling preferences you have already set.

Fuel up by saying your pump number
The flow is deliberately short. You open the Setel app, turn on Voice Fuelling, and then state the number of the pump you have parked at. Setel's AI handles the rest, charging your chosen payment method without you working through the usual taps and confirmations. To help people get started, PETRONAS dealers and ground crew will be at stations to introduce the feature and set customers up the first time.
It works in English, Bahasa Melayu, Mandarin and Tamil, so you can speak in whichever language feels most natural rather than switching to English to get through a menu. For a feature you use with one hand while standing at a pump, that is a practical detail rather than a gimmick.
Built for drivers who find apps fiddly
Setel is pitching this at a wide group: everyday motorists and motorcyclists, fleet operators, and e-hailing drivers who refuel several times a day. It is also aimed at people who are newer to apps, or who simply prefer speaking to tapping, which is where the multilingual support earns its place.
"Voice Fuelling is a good example of how we see AI making a difference in everyday moments," said Abdullah Ayman Awaluddin, Chief Executive Officer of Setel. The pitch is less about novelty and more about removing a few steps from something many Malaysians already do every week.
It fits a broader pattern of Malaysian super-apps adding features that lower the barrier to getting things done on a phone. Setel earlier added bill payments inside the same app, while rivals have pushed in similar directions, such as TNG eWallet letting people without bank accounts receive their salary.
How to try Voice Fuelling
Voice Fuelling is available from Setel app version 1.210.0 onwards. Setel is encouraging users to update to version 1.211.0, rolling out from 9 October 2026, to get the latest version of the experience. Because it is still in beta, expect it to change as Setel tunes it.
The feature works across PETRONAS fuel grades, including PRIMAX 95, PRIMAX 97 and Dynamic Diesel Euro 5, as well as the subsidised BUDI95 and BUDI diesel. If you already use Setel to pay at the pump, there is nothing new to sign up for beyond updating the app and turning the feature on.
For most drivers this will not change how often they fill up, but it does trim a routine task down to a sentence. If the beta holds up, saying "pump five" may become the quickest part of the stop.
