Eddie AI, the AI video editor, has relaunched as a ground-up rebuild called v4, and the headline change is how you pay for it: there is no monthly subscription to open the app, you buy credits and spend them only when you export a finished cut.

The pitch is aimed squarely at freelancers and anyone who edits occasionally. Starting a project, importing footage and prompting Eddie cost nothing, and a credit is deducted only when you export from a project. Existing subscribers who move to v4 keep grandfathered rates. It hands you a real project file, not a flat export

Eddie watches your rushes, finds the story, syncs your cameras, writes music and sources b-roll, then hands the result to Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut as a native project file rather than a flattened video. It can build bins, selects reels, markers and organised b-roll inside an existing Blackmagic Cloud project, drop an assembly into a Premiere Pro Production, and ship as an extension inside Avid Media Composer.

Edit from ChatGPT or Claude

One of the more unusual additions in v4 is that you can connect Eddie inside ChatGPT or Claude and edit from the conversation you are already in, with your cut playing back inline using real frames from your own footage. Eddie also reads reviewer comments left in Frame.io and makes the edit from them.

Built for messier, multicam shoots

v4 handles more cameras, more angles and dual-system audio, grouping and syncing by audio or timecode, including LTC, and labelling each camera by face so you can say "cut to Sarah" rather than "cut to A002." Because it now watches the footage itself and not just the transcript, it can take on sequences that are entirely visual with no dialogue to cut to. It imports BRAW, R3D, MXF, N-RAW, stills and audio from Drive, Dropbox, Frame.io, iconik, LucidLink or your own editing project.

Cloud-synced, and an in-house model in the works

Projects now live in the cloud, so you can start a cut on the desktop app, continue in a browser and review it on your phone, all on the same up-to-date project. For teams there are shared workspaces, frame-level comments, revocable share links, Slack and Teams notifications and enterprise SSO, plus SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, HIPAA and C2PA content credentials. Eddie is also training its own editing model, EddieEditor1-9B, small enough to run locally, which the company says is still in development.
