Most smartwatch specifications are argued about indoors. Two of them are settled the moment you step outside in Malaysia: can you read it, and will it last.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 scored 8.5 out of 10 in our review, the highest of any device in Samsung's current wearable line, and those two answers are most of the reason.

The screen is the headline, and it is a local story

Samsung rates this display at 5,000 nits. That number is meaningless in a shop and decisive in a car park at 2pm. Our review scored the display 9.5 out of 10, its joint-highest mark, precisely because it stays readable in direct sun.

If you have ever cupped a hand over a watch to check a notification outside, that is the problem this solves. It is a small thing that happens ten times a day here.

Battery: the point is not the number, it is the habit

Capacity is up by roughly a third over the previous Ultra, which our review scored 9.0 and described as genuine multi-day life. Charging is faster too, which Samsung took its time getting to.

The practical effect is that the watch stops needing a nightly ritual. That matters more than it sounds, because a watch you charge every night is a watch that is off your wrist while you sleep, which is exactly when it should be measuring you.

The honest problems

It is 47mm and it is heavy. Our review said plainly that it will not suit every wrist. The case is slimmer than before and the bands are lighter, which helps, but this is a large watch and no review score changes that. Try it on.

The full dive computer is not in the box. This is the one to know before buying for that reason. The complete dive experience arrives after launch through a separate app that appears to be subscription-based rather than a one-off purchase, and pricing was not officially confirmed at the time of our review. If diving is why you want it, wait for that detail rather than assume.

Who should buy it

At RM3,399 for the 47mm, this is not a casual purchase, and our review still called it highly recommended. Durability scored 9.5 alongside the display.

Buy it if you are outdoors a lot, if you want a watch that survives being knocked about, and if a large watch suits you. If the size is wrong for your wrist, the Watch9 is the sensible one, and the extra ruggedness here is paid for in millimetres and grams you will feel every day.
