Toys for Bob announces Spyro: A Realm Beyond, the first all-new Spyro game in nearly 20 years, with true dragon flight and Tom Kenny back as the voice of Spyro.

The purple dragon a lot of Malaysian gamers grew up with is finally getting a brand new adventure. Toys for Bob has announced Spyro: A Realm Beyond, the first all-new Spyro game in nearly two decades, arriving in Spring 2027.

Spyro: A Realm Beyond is a fresh start, not a remake

Revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase, the game comes from Toys for Bob, the studio behind the well-received Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time. This time it is not a remaster. A Realm Beyond is a completely original story set in a new world, with a redesigned Spyro and a fresh threat to deal with: an invading force called the Scavs that strands Spyro far from home.

The essentials on Spyro's return.

There is one change longtime fans will notice immediately. For the first time in the series, Spyro gets true dragon flight as part of his core moveset. The classic games mostly limited him to gliding, with full flight saved for a handful of special stages. Here you can soar above the landscape, weave between treetops, and dive off landmarks whenever you like.

Why this one matters

Renowned voice actor Tom Kenny, the original voice of Spyro, is returning to the role, which should reassure fans worried about the character losing his identity in a modern reboot. The reveal leaned on nostalgia while signalling that the team wants to bring in a new generation rather than only service old fans.

It also lands at a time when classic platformers are finding a second life. Pitching a familiar mascot with a genuinely new mechanic, full flight, gives Toys for Bob a clear way to stand apart from the usual run of remasters and re-releases that have filled the genre lately.

Platforms and release window

Spyro: A Realm Beyond is set for Spring 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The inclusion of the Switch 2 is good news for Malaysian players who prefer handheld play, since it means the dragon will travel. The first trailer is live on YouTube, and the studio says more details are coming soon.

For now it is an announcement rather than a deep dive, but the combination of the original voice, a new world, and real flight is enough to put this one on the watch list for 2027.
