For Malaysian players who have cooled on battle royale, Call of Duty is leaning back into a mode built for patience and planning. Infinity Ward has shared the first proper look at the Modern Warfare 4 DMZ mode, the extraction experience returning when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on 23 October 2026.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ returns in a radioactive Hajin
DMZ sits alongside Campaign and Multiplayer as the game's third mode, and this time it has been rebuilt as a full extraction shooter. The action takes place in Hajin, a Korean city turned into a contaminated exclusion zone after a nuclear reactor meltdown. You drop in solo or in a squad, scavenge for gear, work through objectives, and try to extract before the zone turns on you. Rival Operators, increasingly dangerous AI forces, and environmental puzzles all stand between you and a clean exit.

Infinity Ward says the studio's single-player narrative team wrote a story for the mode that picks up after the Campaign and ties directly into the wider Modern Warfare lore. The aim is for Hajin to feel like a game within a game rather than a bolt-on third option.
Extraction, played the Call of Duty way
The mode is split into three ways to play. Story Missions push the narrative forward, alone or with others queued into the same objective. Dynamic Operations hand you a goal while shuffling the steps to reach it on every deployment. Free Roam lets you set your own agenda, whether that is hunting high-value targets, chasing rare loot, or simply surviving. A player-driven bounty system and a deep progression loop are built to keep runs feeling different each time.
Weather does real work here too. Sudden downpours cut visibility and force you to change how you move and fight, while fog banks and overcast skies turn familiar routes into tense guesswork. Extraction shooters have lived mostly in dedicated corners of PC gaming, so a mainstream studio leaning fully into the format is worth watching, especially with Warzone reportedly stepping back this cycle to give DMZ room.
When and where you can play
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on 23 October 2026 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox on PC, Battle.net, Steam, and the Nintendo Switch 2. The DMZ first look trailer debuted at the Xbox Games Showcase, with a fuller deep dive on the official Call of Duty blog.
For players who want something between the chaos of Warzone and the structure of standard multiplayer, DMZ is the part of Modern Warfare 4 to keep an eye on well before October.
