HUAWEI is doubling down on its ecosystem strategy in Malaysia with the launch of the MatePad Mini and Watch GT Runner 2. Instead of chasing ultra-premium flagships, the brand is focusing on practical innovation, more specifically compact productivity and specialised fitness tracking. For Malaysians, especially those looking for value and versatility, the question is whether these devices deliver meaningful upgrades or are simply aimed at niche users.

MatePad Mini: Compact Size, Full Productivity?

The MatePad Mini is designed around portability, measuring just 5.2mm thin and weighing 260g. Despite its small size, HUAWEI is positioning it as a full productivity device, not just a media tablet.

Its 8.8-inch OLED PaperMatte display stands out, offering 2.5K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and anti-glare technology. Compared to typical LCD tablets in this price range, this is a noticeable upgrade, especially for reading and long-term use.

The inclusion of stylus support with the M-Pencil Pro and multi-device collaboration features also pushes it closer to being a laptop alternative. However, compared to competitors like Apple’s iPad Mini or Samsung’s Galaxy Tab series, the biggest limitation remains Huawei’s ecosystem—particularly the lack of Google services, which still affects usability for many Malaysians.

Performance and Practical Value

HUAWEI is emphasising real-world usability, with features such as a 50MP camera, a 6400mAh battery, and 66W fast charging. These specs suggest the MatePad Mini is designed for more than casual use, covering work tasks, content creation, and entertainment.

At RM2,199, the value proposition is competitive, especially with bundled accessories like the stylus and keyboard cover. For Malaysian buyers, these inclusions help offset the cost, making it more appealing than competitors who sell accessories separately.

Still, the question remains whether users truly need a compact productivity tablet or if a larger laptop or tablet would offer better long-term value.

Watch GT Runner 2: Built for Serious Runners

The Watch GT Runner 2 is clearly targeted at fitness enthusiasts, particularly runners. It features advanced GNSS tracking, a new antenna design, and HUAWEI’s X-DR positioning algorithm for improved accuracy in challenging environments.

This is a step up from previous Huawei wearables, which were strong in battery life but less competitive in tracking precision. With features like Intelligent Marathon Mode and performance metrics such as lactate threshold and running power, HUAWEI is now competing more directly with brands like Garmin and Coros.

For runners, especially those training in urban environments like Kuala Lumpur, improved tracking accuracy is a meaningful upgrade.

Everyday Use vs Niche Appeal

While the Watch GT Runner 2 offers over 100 sports modes and up to 14 days of battery life, its advanced running features may be overkill for casual users.

At RM1,499, it sits in a competitive space where users may also consider general-purpose smartwatches like the Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch. The key difference here is focus, as HUAWEI prioritises fitness depth over broader app ecosystems.

Strong Hardware, But Ecosystem Still Matters

Huawei’s latest launch shows a clear focus on practical, specialised devices. The MatePad Mini offers a unique take on portable productivity, while the Watch GT Runner 2 delivers serious tools for runners.

For us Malaysians, the value is there—especially with bundled offers and strong hardware. However, ecosystem limitations and niche positioning mean these devices won’t appeal to everyone.
