OPPO Find N5 Review: Thin, Powerful... & It Connects to Macbooks!

As a book-style foldable smartphone, the OPPO Find N5 is perhaps one of THINNEST and lightest phones of its kind in the market right now. It has got good cameras and a nice screen, definitely. BUT there are also several star features on the phone, such as mirroring and controlling your Macbook through the phone.

And, it has got a price tag of RM7,999 too. How does it fare? Here's our review.

The Outside: Design & Screen at Just 4.21mm Thin

It's Slim, it's Big

First thing’s first, hardware. Officially, OPPO says the Find N5 is at 4.21mm unfolded — that’s about two RM0.50 coins worth stacked. When you fold it, it’s about 8.93mm and it weighs just at 229g — about the weight of an iPhone 16 Pro Max. So this is quite a pocketable phone.

Now taking a look at the display(s) which is crucial with a foldable phone. On the outside - you’re getting a 6.62” OLED Display with a refresh rate of 120Hz while the inner display is 8.12” in size, effectively making it one of the largest of all foldable phones. For scale, the screen is more or less (if not) the same size as the iPad Mini.

Primed For Uninterrupted User Experience

Here's one of our favourite parts about the Find N5. The screen's materials have been upgraded to reduce the crease by 50%, so it’s less noticeable and really feels smooth when using your phone. Simply speaking, the drop around the hinge is almost flat, flushed and non-existent.

OPPO says that the motherboard is 65% more compact because of its double-layer PCB design, which makes the phone more efficient in pwoer without adding more bulk. This was also how OPPO achieved the “impossibly thin and lightweight” foldable design.

Sleek Yet Comfortable to Use

The Find N5 is also rated IPX6 + IP7X + IPX9 waterproofing for resistance against bending, scratches, and spills. It has a tough titanium alloy hinge and a durable fiber back cover.

The Inside: Multitasking & Productivity at Its Finest

Operating System

The OPPO Find N5 uses ColorOS 15, which is designed to make multitasking much easier.

ColorOS 15 feels more intuitive with its Boundless View Split-Screen that opens up to 3 tabs at a time. To enable multitasking quicker, rather than optimising through the setting menu, all you need to do is double-finger swipe across the screen to cut your apps in half and move on to the next quickly—pretty fun and amusing to do.

Further enhancing the ease is AI-assisted WPS control to open and manage two documents simultaneously.

Powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite

Powering this phone is the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor with a custom-made 7-core CPU — it has 16GB RAM which can be extended by up to a whopping 12GB to effectively give you  28GM RAM - making multitasking so much easier.

All-Day Battery Despite Its Light Body

The Find N5 is also supercharged with a 5600mAh battery capacity, complemented with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging. Through those stats, you can achieve 100% battery in just 50 minutes of charging. In short, battery is not a concern for the Find N5.

Highlight 1: Marrying The OPPO Find N5 With Apple Macbook

Transferring photos was also instantaneous!

The lot of us may be working with Macs but have difficulty parting with our personal Android devices, and it’s usually such a hassle to work between the two. Well, OPPO has O+ Connect built in and that pretty much solves that. Yes, there's no need for cables. You can screencast, share files, and even control your iMac remotely with the Find N5.

We have witnessed this before in some new OPPO phones where you essentially use it as an "Airdrop" function between OPPO and Apple products, but now it’s been taken one step further.

For us, this is truly an astounding feature we are excited to see developments in. Through O+ Connect you get a full display of your Macbook and even carry out proper trackpad gesture controls. Just put the phone in the folded mode (sitting at 90 degree) and you can use the bottom display as a trackpad while the top is your mac display - essentially turning it into a mini mac.

Also with O+ connect, you can transfer your photos literally in real time. This might even be faster than using the iPhone with the Mac - that’s wild.

Highlight 2: AI & Camera

The Find N5 comes with four AI Assistant features from the get-go. As straightforward as they are, they boost productivity much more, which is a given due to how smooth the performance is and the tempting big screen of the Find N5. At large, Find N5's AI is centered to perform search results quicker.

  1. AI Search
  2. Gemini AI Assistant
  3. Circle to Search
  4. AI Translate App

Camera and Photography

For each shot taken, since the Find N5 runs on HyperTone Image Engine — photos captured were able to display with richer details, especially in bright and mid-tone areas. It also has Periscope Telephoto Camera with 10cm macro that captures intricate details.

Finally, the camera includes Hasselblad-style natural bokeh, dual golden portrait focal lengths at 1.70mm & 85mm for Portrait Mode at 3x & 3.6x — this achieves more professional shots with natural dynamic range and colours overall.

And for everyday shots, it comes with LivePhoto stablization, so your photos stay crisp and steady.

Who's This For?

At RM7,999, it's obviously not cheap. But if you can afford it, we really like the OPPO Find N5.

The fast-paced innovation in foldable smartphones had us slightly jaded about foldable phones due to our worries and concerns on the obvious creases of the screen, or how good the photos would look, or how much we can do on foldables compared to a non-foldable phone especially for their high price.

Thankfully, we've really enjoyed what the Find N5 has offered so far. And now with O+ Connect, Find N5 is one step closer to bridging devices despite their OS, so we're now more confident in leaving a single ecosystem and start enjoying both Android and Apple together.

Watch our video on the OPPO Find N5 below:

Pros:

  • Big screen
  • Very lightweight & feels compact when folded
  • Pocketable size
  • The almost flat screen was nice to use
  • You can use the O+ Connect to bridge between the phone & Macbooks

Cons:

  • OS can still be optimised better; when the screen folds to close, the front screen locks with the phone
  • On the pricier end compared to some other foldable smartphones
