HUAWEI Watch GT 5 Pro Review Malaysia

Review: HUAWEI Watch GT 5 Pro 42mm—A Very Pretty Watch In All Its Ceramic Glory

She's pretty, no buts (well, maybe a little)

Building on the success of the Watch GT 4 series, HUAWEI has launched a new series of smartwatches, this time with a Pro variant. The HUAWEI Watch GT 5 Pro looks just as elegant and fashionable as its predecessor, with even more features and improved tracking.

Design & Build

The HUAWEI Watch GT 5 Pro is available in two sizes: 42mm and 46mm. We have the Ceramic White 42mm version, specifically designed with a more “ladylike” appeal. It’s only 1mm larger than the GT 4 (41mm) but boasts a ceramic body with gold and silver accents, making it look more luxurious and refined.

Unlike the full round design that the Watch GT 4 had, the Watch GT 5 Pro has a distinctive octagonal bezel with a matte finish, designed to resist fingerprints and smudges. Additionally, the sapphire glass covering the display is scratch-resistant, enhancing its toughness. Overall, the Watch GT 5 is a great choice for both casual and formal occasions.

On top of the ceramic body, our Watch GT 5 Pro also comes with a full ceramic strap. There are more straps available officially, and all of them come with quick-release buttons for easy replacement.

While the Watch GT 5 looks almost exactly the same as the Watch GT 4, Pro version is distinctive in the white bezel around the watch face. I’ll be honest: the bezel rather put me off when I first saw the Watch GT 5 Pro, because it makes the watch look much bulkier than it actually is, and also takes away the “regular luxury watch” look that was the whole charm of the GT 4.

Plus, it’s really unfortunate that the bezel is purely ornamental and does literally nothing. I would’ve preferred if it could rotate like how the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 Classic’s rotating bezel, but I guess you can’t have everything.

Another upgrade on the design is the side buttons: the top rotating crown and bottom button are thoughtfully angled at 45 degrees, so it’s easier to use and prevent mis-presses when you flex your wrist.

Display

The HUAWEI Watch GT 5 Pro has a 1.32-inch AMOLED display that’s more vibrant than the last generation’s display. It’s also really bright, so I did not have any trouble with visibility, even under direct sunlight.

The screen is also highly responsive, performing well even in light rain, making it reliable for outdoor use. Whether you’re checking notifications or interacting with the interface, the touchscreen is smooth and seamless.

Performance

The Watch GT 5 Pro is powered by HUAWEI’s HarmonyOS and pairs with a smartphone via the HUAWEI Health App. Sadly, the Google ban means that the app is not available on the Google Play Store, though you can still download an apk through third-party means (surprisingly, it’s on Samsung’s Galaxy Store).

For iOS users like me, though, things are much simpler: the HUAWEI Health app is on the App Store, so pairing with the Watch GT 5 is as easy as downloading the app and connecting the Watch via Bluetooth. For reference, I paired our review unit with an iPhone 15.

Of course, like all other brand ecosystems, you’ll only get the full experience of the watch if you connect it to the same brand—with my iPhone 15, I was unable to access the HUAWEI Wallet and thus cannot utilize the NFC feature on the Watch GT 5 Pro. This was the same on the HUAWEI Watch GT 4, so I wasn’t particularly surprised.

I’ve been using the HUAWEI Watch GT 4 for a little over a year by now (read my review from last year!), so I’m pretty much used to the HUAWEI smartwatch UI. On the whole, it’s pretty intuitive and doesn’t really demand a huge learning curve.

On a brighter note, the Watch GT 5 Pro now has more useful features like a small keyboard for quick replies, full-colour maps, and a built-in speaker for calls, workout notifications, and music playback. The speaker, in particular, is louder than expected and has decent audio quality.

Fitness & Tracking

Like all smartwatches, fitness and health tracking are the main uses of the HUAWEI Watch GT 5 Pro. With over 100 workout modes, it caters to popular activities like running and swimming, as well as niche activities like parachuting, parkour, and motorsport. Most notably, it also has the advanced golfing mode that supports 15,000 courses globally, offering 3D previews, distance tracking, and swing analysis for avid golfers.

For more context, the Golf Mode was introduced with the new HUAWEI Watch Ultra, which means you get Ultra capabilities with the sleeker, more stylish (in my opinion) smartwatch!

HUAWEI’s proprietary TruSense system ensures accurate readings for heart rate, skin temperature, ECG, and even sleep apnea detection.

In particular, I’d like to give a shoutout to the GPS tracking, which is highly precise thanks to the Sunflower Antenna system. The system boosts route and distance accuracy by 30-40%. I tried this out during my vacation in China, and I was able to track exactly where I’ve been in the city and make sure that I’ve visited every scenic spot!

Battery

Huawei claims up to 14 days of battery life for the 42mm model, though real-world usage may vary. During my 10-day trip to China, I used the watch extensively to track my outdoor walks, answer calls, and check notifications. With always-on display and 24/7 health monitoring enabled, I had to charge it once during the trip.

This equated to roughly 5 days of usage on a single charge, which, while not as long-lasting as the Watch GT 4, still outperforms most Samsung and Apple smartwatches that require daily charging.

Charging is fast and efficient, taking just short of 1 hour to reach full capacity using the included magnetic puck. This isn’t much to write home about since the Watch GT 4 and Galaxy Watch 7 charges at about the same rate.

Verdict

Overall, I really liked the HUAWEI Watch GT 5 Pro 42mm. In terms of design, it’s much more polished than its predecessor once it started to grow on me, and the GPS tracking was very helpful for runners (or walkers). It even connects well with my iPhone 15, giving me more smartwatch options instead of having to just stick to an Apple Watch.

So, if you’re looking for a pretty smartwatch that has all the smartwatch capabilities you need, the HUAWEI Watch GT 5 is a great option!
