Samsung Overtakes Apple as World's Biggest Mobile Phone Seller

It's one point to the Androids!

Samsung has reclaimed its position as the world's largest mobile phone seller, pushing Apple into second place. This shift comes after a notable decline in iPhone sales, largely attributed to tough competition in key markets like China.

For 12 consecutive years, Samsung held the title of the biggest mobile phone seller until the end of 2023 when Apple's iPhone sales surged ahead. However, in the first quarter of 2024, Samsung regained its lead, capturing a 20.8% market share compared to Apple's 17.3%, according to research firm IDC.

Apple has lost its position as biggest smartphone seller due to the drop of sales in the Chinese market, even though the company reported an 8% increase in global shipments. As of 2024 Q1, Apple's market share is down to 17.3%, whereas Samsung took the lead at 20.8%.

Samsung's rise was attributed to the successful launch of its latest high-end Galaxy S24 models. Leveraging Galaxy AI features such as automatic phone call translation and Circle to Search with Google, the rise of AI in smartphones has led to speculations that Apple might be doing the same thing in its upcoming launches. With WWDC24 right around the corner (10 - 14 June), we've certainly got much to look forward to.

Meanwhile, #Xiaomi takes third place at 14.1% market share, followed by #Transsion and #OPPO.

Apple is facing challenges, particularly in China, where local rivals like Xiaomi and Huawei exerted pressure. The country's government also imposed bans on devices made by foreign companies in workplaces, further denting Apple's sales.
