Review: Samsung Galaxy S24 — Galaxy AI Shaking Things Up

It may be pricey, but is it worth it?

It’s not hot-off-the-press news by now that Samsung recently launched its Galaxy S24 series, but it’s still exciting to welcome the latest members to the Samsung family. The Galaxy S24 might be the base model of the latest Galaxy S series, but it still has plenty of great functions and features that we discovered about it.

Of course, as Galaxy AI was the main focal point of this launch, we made sure to test it out heavily to ensure that we used the phone as intended. So whether or not you’re considering a new smartphone upgrade, have a look through at how we tested the full extent of the Galaxy S24.

Display & Design

Let’s clear up one thing first: Yes, the design is much nicer now with the Galaxy S24 series. Not that there was anything wrong with the previous designs, but the current Galaxy S24 design with the thicker, flatter sides just makes it so much easier to grip and pick up from surfaces. There’s also the new Armor Aluminum frame with matte finishing, providing a nice luxurious feel and anti-fingerprint properties.

Don't think that this compact device isn’t capable of packing a punch either, as it has a brighter screen with 2600 nits at peak brightness, making it great for sunny outdoor conditions. Along with the upgraded 120Hz refresh rate, the Galaxy S24 is capable of producing clearer images, and this claim isn’t an exaggeration.

Whether it was watching our favourite music videos on YouTube or catching up on the latest plot in a game, the Galaxy S24 had smooth displays and fluid animations that made using the phone extra enjoyable throughout the day.

Performance & Battery

Powered by the Exynos 2400 chipset, the processing power of the Galaxy S24 doesn’t pale in comparison to other models on the market. While there is a slight upgrade in terms of performance on the phone, we also noted that it performed relatively well even with the addition of Galaxy AI.

The available features of Galaxy AI on the base model were more than sufficient in allowing us to experience the best of Galaxy AI, however, we particularly enjoyed Circle to Search and Chat Assist on the Samsung Keyboard. Being able to access such convenient tools at our fingertips made everyday tasks easier to handle, especially when it came to anything to do with foreign languages.

However, we also noticed that the phone tended to heat up relatively quickly while using Galaxy AI, particularly with the Generative Fill function.

Other than that, our overall gaming experience on the Galaxy S24 was pretty good, as we could play Honkai: Star Rail at 30 fps and max visual settings with only mild lagging on the screen and relatively good response times.

Battery life was also decent on the Galaxy S24, as it is slightly upgraded from last year’s model. A full charge on the 4000mAh battery was able to last us more than a day, and that included using Galaxy AI and other more intensive tasks like gaming.

Camera

While the camera sensors on the Galaxy S24 might have remained the same as its predecessor, that doesn’t mean there’s been no improvements. Photos now look exactly as how they would look when you take them thanks to the HDR preview on the viewfinder.

Daytime photography is still as great as you’d expect from the Galaxy S series, but there was also the improvement of more natural-looking and less sharpened photos that were taken on the Galaxy S24. We were also impressed by the ability to beautifully adjust the exposure on photos even in hard lighting conditions.

Here's a sample of one of the photos taken on the Galaxy S24:

But the best – and probably only different thing about the Galaxy S24 camera – is the addition of Galaxy AI, or more importantly, Generative Edit. We’ve had our fair share of experiences where the photo snapped wasn’t positioned the best, but Generative Edit was able to rectify that problem with no issue.

Plus, instead of using any other third-party apps (that usually require payments of some kind), we could remove any unwanted background objects and reconfigure them if we wanted to! That function was super handy to have readily available at any time, and something on the Galaxy S24 that was highly appreciated by us.

If you want a phone with improved AI functionality, the Samsung Galaxy S24 is the one for you. Galaxy AI was made to be as straightforward and functional as possible, which had the added benefit of being a business/workplace phone. The camera was unchanged from the previous model, which meant it was just as powerful at capturing important moments. However, if you're happy with your S23 or any other flagship Android phone and won't use AI too much, then it might not be worth the upgrade.
