Lenovo Yoga Book 9i Review Malaysia

Review: Lenovo Yoga Book 9i — Two Is Better Than One, But With Sacrifices

Two screens are cool, but it's not perfect.

With all the hype about foldable smartphones right now, we’re probably forgetting that we already have foldable devices in our hands—well, laps, technically. Laptops have become so commonplace that it’s hard to think that there could be any further changes to the familiar build and design.

Well, Lenovo took that as a challenge and gave us the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i: an innovative dual-screen laptop that is made up entirely of screens. Yes, you heard that right: where the keyboard and trackpad is supposed to be on a regular keyboard, the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i has another screen!

We got the opportunity to review the incredible Yoga Book 9i, so here’s what we think of it!

Lenovo Yoga Book 9i Specifications

  • Processor: Up to 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1355U
  • Operating System: Up to Windows 11 Pro
  • Graphics:  Intel® Iris® Xe
  • Memory: 16GB LPDDR5X
  • Storage: Up to 1TB PCIe SSD Gen 4

Design & Display

When closed, the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i looks just like any other laptop. It retains Lenovo’s signature minimalist design, with only the Lenovo and Yoga branding on the left and right edges of the laptop. The Yoga Book 9i sports an aluminium clamshell exterior, giving it a sleek and premium look.

On the inside, though, everything is different. Upon opening, you’ll be greeted with two 13.3-inch OLED displays with brilliant, paunchy colours and amazing graphics. It’s really like having two large tablets joined together with hinges. It’s also capable of turning 360 degrees to transform into a singular large tablet.

All screen doesn’t mean you’ll have to rely on external keyboards and mice for the lifespan of the laptop, even if those came in the box. Like foldable smartphones, the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i is all about versatility: you can use it like a regular laptop with a virtual keyboard and trackpad, a dual-screen laptop, or even a tablet with screens on both front and back.

That said, the virtual keyboard is really the worst keyboard I’ve ever had the displeasure to use. Since there’s obviously no tactile feel, you don’t know if you’re pressing the right key—or even pressing a key at all—until you see the words on the screen, and the keys are unconventionally far apart. If I wanted to keep making typos, I would’ve just typed on my phone, really.

Thankfully, the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i comes with a wireless keyboard and stylus in the box, which is great, considering what you paid for it. The wireless keyboard snaps magnetically to the bottom half of the laptop, making it possible to use it as a regular laptop (still with the virtual trackpad). You can also snap it onto the bottom part of the bottom screen so that you can get 1.5 screens.

Performance

I had put a lot of hope into the gaming performance of the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i, but unfortunately, it was a bit of a disappointment. The Lenovo Yoga Book 9i is powered by the Intel Core i7-1355U processor, which was developed specifically for ultrabooks and smaller laptops.

Equipped with 16GB of RAM, the Yoga Book 9i is also well-suited for multitasking. Whether you're running multiple browser tabs, editing documents, or working on a presentation, the ample RAM ensures that tasks are executed without any lag or slowdowns.

However, while the processor is great for daily usage and general multitasking, it really is not for gaming or heavy creative tasks, which is a waste of the brilliant OLED screens in my opinion. It’s good enough for some casual games at low graphic settings like Untitled Goose Game, but AAA titles like Hogwarts Legacy just refused to run altogether.

As for creatives, Photoshop and Illustrator worked fine, but there’s a limit to how many layers you can render until the laptop stutters. There’s no proper palm rejection as well, so drawing on it was a bit of a hassle.

The Lenovo Yoga Book 9i is truly one-of-a-kind, but it’s not perfect. It’s very useful for multitaskers, as two screens really enhance productivity like no other, but if you’re looking for something to game on, you’d fare better with a traditional laptop. The Lenovo Yoga Book 9i is made for a very specific demographic (entertainment and multitasking). If you’re in that category, then it’s a great device; if not, you might want to think twice about it, especially with the hefty price tag.
