Samsung Announces Sustainability Vision for Mobile (2022)

Samsung’s mission on sustainability continues on this year through their Galaxy For the Planet initiative.

First announced in 2021, the Galaxy For the Planet sustainability platform outlines Samsung’s commitment to acting more sustainably across its mobile platform. By 2025, they aim to achieve four goals:

Incorporate recycled material in all new mobile products

Samsung is investing in new and innovative eco-conscious materials for its products. This year, more than 90% of the new Galaxy Buds2 Pro is made with recycled materials, while the new Galaxy Z series incorporates ocean-bound plastic into its key hardware and components.

Eliminate all plastics in mobile packaging by 2025

By reducing, removing, and replacing unnecessary resources and materials used in traditional device packaging, Samsung is working towards the full elimination of single-use plastic from product packaging. In line with this goal, the packaging for the new Galaxy Z Series, the Flip4 and Fold4, is made out of 100% recycled paper and up to 58% smaller in volume compared to the first-generation foldables.

Reduce power consumption

Samsung will be prioritizing energy-saving technology to decrease power consumption and achieve energy efficiency. They have successfully reduced the standby power consumption across all smartphone chargers to 0.02W, which is among the most energy efficient in the industry.

Achieve zero waste

In yesterday’s Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung reiterated the importance of addressing e-waste and advancing a circular economy that preserves and repurposes the planet’s finite resources. They have now expanded the Galaxy Upcycling program, which gives new life to old Galaxy smartphones by turning them into smart home devices or medical diagnosis equipment through a simple software upgrade.
