FAQ

- What is rum made from?

Rum is a type of distilled liquor that is made from sugarcane and its by-products. First made in the tropical Caribbean islands, it’s made with 100% cane products that include raw cane juice, white or brown sugar cane, cane syrup, evaporated cane sugar and cane molasses.

- How is rum made?

After harvesting the sugarcane (typically by hand using a machete) and extracting its juices, there are three ways to make rum.

  1. The sugar cane juice is fermented and distilled. This is the most direct approach to making natural rum.
  2. The juice is cooked and concentrated into syrup, and then fermented and distilled. This method is favoured by some distilleries as it allows them to distil all year round without the limitations of harvest season.
  3. The final and most common way is making rum from fermented molasses. The sugarcane juice is first processed into sugar, with molasses as a by-product, which is then fermented to make rum.

- What mixes good with rum?

Some liquids that are perfect to be mixed with rum are tonic water, lime, lemon, ginger ale, orange juice, coconut water, cranberry juice, grapefruit juice or any juice in general. The key is to mix it with something either sour or sweet in flavour to offset the tangy and sometimes spicy tones of the rum.
