A Look Into: CHERRY Mechanical Keyboards in 2022 - Worth It?

"The best mechanical keyboards for gaming and work." Is it really?

Every day in Malaysia, more and more people are buying mechanical keyboards. Whether they’re esports gamers looking to up their game, office workers who want a more comfortable typing experience, or even just enthusiasts who love the experience of making their own keyboard, mechanical keyboards have become more popular than ever.

And it’s not hard to see why. The tactile feedback, satisfying clicks and clacks, and their overall designs make them an attractive buy, perfect for whether you’re gaming or working.

But First Who Is CHERRY?

Anyone who considers themselves a bit of a techie or computer geek must know, or at least have heard, about CHERRY. And if you don't, here's a quick refresher. They’re one of the biggest names in the keyboard world, due in part to their CHERRY MX Switches.

And this prestige didn’t just come from nowhere. With all switches being 100% made in Germany, CHERRY MX Switches are famous due to the rigorous testing and strict quality control they go through before even making it onto a keyboard.

Every key switch they produce is rated to go well above 50 million clicks, meaning they can last you well over a lifetime of use without even close to breaking down.

And although there are a number of other mechanical keyboard manufacturers out there, CHERRY stills remains one of the best, offering quality products that can stand the test of time.

As such, here are a couple of the best and latest CHERRY keyboards you can buy today, each with its own unique features and characteristics. We take a brief dive to see if these keyboards are worth your time.

CHERRY G80-3000s

If the name of this model sounds familiar to you, then either you have a decent history of mechanical keyboards, or you’re eligible for a pension. Named after the classic G80-3000 that came out in the late 80s, this latest model acts as a sort of tribute to its predecessor by taking a lot of inspiration from its design.

But instead of a full-sized keyboard, the newer model uses a tenkeyless design, which means it lacks a number pad but in return is a lot lighter and compact, making it easier to carry around.

The keyboard comes in black, but also a much more nostalgic white colourway. There’s a sturdy kickstand located on the bottom of the keyboard which elevates it to a more comfortable typing position, and it’s available in Cherry MX Blue, Brown, Red, and Silent Red.

The RGB version of the keyboard is priced at RM309, but you can save a bit of money going for the non-backlit variant which only costs around RM239.

CHERRY MX 3.0s

With an aluminium encasing that offers a premium look and feel, as well as prevents flexing of any sort, and bottom-side printed keycaps that offer a stealthy aesthetic; the CHERRY MX 3.0s is an industrial style mechanical keyboard that can easily fit in an office space or a gaming room.

Its minimalist design compacts the keys together, whereas the removable micro-USB cable means that you’ll have an easy time carrying this full-sized keyboard around.

The keyboard comes in black or white, and if you're not a fan of the bottom-side printed keys, then know that CHERRY also offers a pink version which has top-printed keycaps.

There’s even a wireless version of the CHERRY MX 3.0s, which has a USB-C port for charging and data. You have three methods of connection with it: a wired USB-C port, a 2.4Ghz dongle which has a 1ms latency which is perfect for gaming, or a lower-powered Bluetooth connection that can help save battery life. With RGB on, you can get up to 11 hours of use, but turn it off and the keyboard can last a whopping 200 hours.

You can also purchase the AC 3.3, a palm rest compatible with all CHERRY MX 3.0s keyboards, which has a wide base of 100mm, perfect for hands of all sizes and helps to avoid any health complications that can arrive from long typing sessions.

The keyboard is available in four different switches, the CHERRY MX Blue, Brown, Red, and Silent Red.

Price-wise, the non-RGB version of the CHERRY MX3.0s comes in at RM329, with the black and white RGB versions coming in at RM429 and RM 449 respectively. The top-printed keys pink version of the keyboard is available for RM459.

For the wireless version, you’re paying a bit more, as they cost RM779 and RM799 for the black and white version respectively.

CHERRY MX 10.0

The CHERRY MX 10.0’s unique form factor makes it stand out amidst the sea of mechanical keyboards. It uses special low-profile CHERRY MX Red switches, manufactured in Germany It also has full-on RGB lighting and a top height of only 22mm.

This keyboard isn’t just slim, however, as it’s also comfortable and ergonomic to use. Therefore, it is great for any situation you put it in, but particularly for professional settings when you don’t want to stand out too much.

Another professional feature it has is its USB-C port connection, meaning that you never have to carry too many cables around. Even though the switches are unique to the keyboard, they’re still compatible with most keycaps available on the market, meaning you can change them as you see fit.

You can get the CHERRY MX 10.0 for RM699, which also includes a premium aluminium carrying case for your keyboard, with cut-out slots for both your keyboard and cable.

Choose CHERRY Malaysia

As much as they are an investment, a proper mechanical keyboard offers more than just quality. Especially for CHERRY Keyboards, they are made with ergonomics and durability in mind for all kinds of users.

Being more widespread and popular than ever, anyone looking for their first mechanical keyboard or is just planning to upgrade should consider a CHERRY Keyboard.

Luckily, CHERRY is officially available in Malaysia on both Lazada and Shopee (via our links). In Malaysia, all CHERRY keyboards are backed by a 2-year warranty. Additionally, CHERRY Malaysia on Facebook is easily contactable should you require any further assistance.

Even if you're just getting started with mechanical keyboards; having a proper one over budget options is the recommended route as you'll want your first good mechanical keyboard to be comfortable, durable and of global standards, which is what the CHERRY Keyboards are all about.
